Since everyone else has some tracks up, I should throw up something I created.
My good friend back home, TOKIN, just released an EP a month back. A solid hip hop offering but I wanted to slow it down, chop up the vocals, and bury them deeper in the mix. All over one of my favorite beats by Joker (yeah I wish I made this beat…)
I wasn’t gonna post this but I played it for a few people and they dug it, so here you go. Not mastered or anything.
And yes, I’ll play dubstep late tonight. Lots of new vinyl…

TOKIN – I Cook A Little (Heatwolves Die Slow In Outer Space Edit)
On a similar tip, I love this track from the new Starkey EP.

Starkey – Paradise (+Verb Remix)

This sign is post-Chinglish. Overly-accommodating, some might say. Students of both American and British English can understand. And the semi-colon thrown in for style points…damn.
Moving on, the whole concept of Beat Buffet is to bring lots of different music together at one party, and not just different sub-genres of electronic dance music. Ideally, kids can hear some music they’ve never heard before, explore it, and then go home and make some.
Can’t do that without rock and roll -
The first shows I ever went to were rock shows, at Kraftbrau in Kalamazoo. For a few months I hobbled in there with a broken leg. DJs can make crowds lose their shit for sure, but they’ll never do it with the same kind of energy that a good live band can.
Friend or Foe are a classic party band in the sense that they like to get fucked up (but stay sharp, never sloppy) and play hard, danceable rock and punk. Their bass player DJs acid house too, but not tonight. Get down early tonight (9:30ish) and wild out.
This first track reminds me of Dead Kennedys while the second treads into post-punk territory.

Friend or Foe – Burnt Out Buildings

In anticipation of tomorrow’s show, DJ Cavia, the vinyl champion from a small-as-fuck city in An Hui, DJ Cavia, agreed to put together an exclusive mix for the site.
While most young Chinese people listen to awful pop music, Cavia maintains his status as China’s number one Frank Zappa fan. A few years back he dropped out of university, bought a pair of Technics and a mixer, and in a few years became the China DMC Champion then flew to London to compete with sucka DJs from around the globe.
This mix travels all over the genrescape – classic party tracks from the collective memory, rap, rock, funk, and some left-field bombs, all mixed on Serato with plenty of scratching and beat juggling. I especially like the second half.
Peep him tomorrow night at Lune.

DJ Cavia – Promo Mix For The Smoking Animal Beat Buffet (#5)
Photo taken at Kin, the only place in Shanghai selling new hip hop records, rare sneakers, and [bomb] fresh-cooked food under one roof.

Got an original copy of this vinyl a few weeks ago. From 1985, same as me. One of my top ten albums ever. As far as noise-pop, this album alone kills anything by My Bloody Valentine. Can’t imagine the state of mind these dudes were in while recording this…
Three amazing tracks, but just about everything on this album is 10/10. Track this down immediately if you don’t have it already.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – The Hardest Walk

I seriously survived on canned coffee, convenience store sushi, and convenience store potato croquettes in Tokyo. Vending machines post up on nearly every corner, offering proper coffee (as proper as canned-coffee can get) for about RMB10. Like, pure black coffee. No “coffee-like substances” or milk-ish sweetener compounds.
The canned coffee in Shanghai? Sucks. Nothing like coffee at all. Suppose the Kirin “Fire” will work in a pinch, but better to just hit up an 85 degrees bakery for a RMB8 Americano, or that weird but intriguing “sea salt coffee.”
Speaking of staying up, the two Frenchmen behind today’s track do not sleep, for they do not require sleep. The Horses = Acid Pony Club, a duo I’ve DJed with for over a year now and easily the hardest working producers in Shanghai. Sometimes they crank out a dozen edits in a week between holding down the sound systems at some of Shanghai’s finer venues and DJing constantly. They also cook, and quite well.
Catch them at Beat Buffet #5 this Saturday. Instead of a normal DJ set, they’re dragging their samplers, synths, and other hardware out of their production nest for a live set. Do not miss.
Not available for download because this comes out on vinyl and download on Dec. 17th. Cop ‘dat.
