egypt. egypt.

yeah dudes gamble on cricket fighting here. i thought the crickets fight to the death but apparently they just battle until one cowers.

Anyway, mad thanks to everyone who came out to Dada for Love Bang last night (and big up yourself to the people who bought me drinks while I was playing for like five hours straight). After that, Drunk Monk rolled through with so many hot unreleased tracks. Patrick Mai came by in the clutch and hooked up the soundsystem fat too. Bass was huge.

Played this track at the dance and it went off. Listening to a lot of Boddika lately has me back on the electro tip. Not talkin about Ed Banger electro – I’m talking about The Egyptian Lover.

I don’t know much about The Egyptian Lover. I don’t think he’s from Egypt, and his tracks feel like warping through space with those anime motion lines, crystals, subwoofers, and a gang of freaky women. His production is out of control. Still on it too – just had a remix on the Moodymann Freaky Mutha F cker 12″ (awesome plate; sold out).

Merica

They almost got it. Unless the writer intentionally dropped the “e” in America so it’s like Amrrrrrrrican, then bonus style points for sure. But in that case they should have dropped the “i” as well.

In case you can’t read all the text, that’s:
“Over verdent pastures and through forest of Jade, they glide in majesty. In schools of brilliance, they dance to the rhythms of life, bringing peace and wonder to all who behold. Within this theater of water, there exists a world.”

They stole that straight from a god damn GRE study guide.

This song puts me in the mood for summer. And by summer I mean driving around in a car and bumping rap music with the windows down. That’s the America tie-in.

this is not a restaurant

Went to the pet and plant market near the Line 10 Laoximen station last week. Got a man-eating plant, no chinchilla. Lots of grasshoppers up there. Plants are affordable, like $150 – 200 for a big, nice house plant. [update: 12/28/2011 the plant i bought is still alive and better than ever]

More on that and other strange markets coming soon. Just a track for now. Been bumpin this one on the company bus for months. Distal = a producer to watch this year.

“for real? dubstep from Macau? tonight?”

Remember looking forward to saturday mornings? Cartoons. Possibly some cake for breakfast. Now we look forward to Saturday nights, and in today’s case, have to go to work on saturday morning.

Don’t really have much to say about that, so gonna post some classic hip hop instead.

Big dubstep show at Shelter tonight. I’m looking forward to that like I used to look foward to some Rocko’s Modern Life. Peep the tracks over at SmartShanghai and head down to number 5 Yongfu Lu (the place downstairs, not the one upstairs with all the Eurotrash and tech house). If these guys are anywhere near as ill as Macanese pork chop sammiches…

Lords of the Underground – Chief Rocka

The second track got sampled just a few years later by one of rap’s greats – any idea who? guess, and you might win some cake.

Love Bang 5!

Massive Love Bang later this month. I’m joined by the don of the Shanghai dubstep scene, Drunk Monk – the man responsible for bringing Kode9, Shackleton, Rob Smith, and tons of other heavy hitters to Shanghai. Dude’s sets are always classic and full of unreleased ish played by no one else in SH. Peep his site over at Sub-Culture Shanghai.

Backed up as usual by Asia’s freshest MC, One Consciousness. Expect a mix for this party coming sometime this week.

For anyone wondering what I mean by Syrup Crunk, peep today’s track. Lotta cats overlooked this EP in 2010; Rustie is seriously on some other shit…

pulled

I eat at Lan Zhou La Mian dian (restaurants) way too often. Sometimes I get tuduo niurou gaijiao fan (potato and beef cooked rice) or ziran yangrou gaijiao fan (cumin and lamb cooked rice), but often just straight up da wan la mian; jia rou, jia jidan (large bowl of pulled noodles; extra beef + fried egg on top).

You can find one of these restaurants on almost any street in Shanghai, and they’re usually open 24-hours (cab drivers eat this constantly). I’d never seen one in The States before, but amazingly enough my friend introduced me to one in Philly’s Chinatown.

Even though they translated their hometown’s name wrong (it’s Lan Zhou not Nan Zhou), they make some bomb dao xiao mian. A filling meal for like $5,  a dollars-to-fullness rivaled only by Subway’s $5 footlong. Imagine La Mian with proper American beef…yeah.

Not gonna try to draw a comparison between pulled noodles and the band ESG, except that you need both of them in your life.

They’re one of the most sampled groups of all time. Three girls from the Bronx who made incredibly danceable music with real instruments around 1981. A compilation album, “Dance To The Best Of ESG” dropped a few months ago, peep/cop it here.

werk it

As someone who grew up listening to rap/hip hop and only much later got into house and techno, I really dig [some] Juke. This breed of hyperfast dance music got lots of press last year, with several proper releases on Planet Mu and other labels after years bubbling in the Chicago underground. Much like how dubstep sounds totally different from everything else, so does this. Like, imagine Dance Dance Revolution combined with the hood movies from the early 1990′s (Juice, Boyz in the Hood, etc), and prlly some spaceships too.

.

Definitely a love it or hate it genre. If you cringe at repeated, pitch-shifted vocal samples, you will loathe this. You might think it sounds like someone on amphetamines attacking a typewriter, or an MPC. If you like Ghettotech, you will probably love this.

Search for “footwork” or “chicago juke” on youtube to see some crazy dancing to these 160+ beats per minute beats. Like, remember when combos in video games first came out, circa Killer Instinct? This invokes that same “damn, this is fast.”

Addison Groove, the man behind 2010′s massive “Footcrab” track, which borrowed heavily from juke (albeit slowed to 138bpm), put together this mix. A solid introduction to the genre, especially with the Luniz and Coolio samples.

Perfect for running through clouds of firework smoke. I seriously saw at least three people nearly get rocked by faulty projectile fireworks today.

For Reference, no DL. Addison Groove – Footcrab VIP

who is mr. cash? we finna get balmy in dis motherfucker.

Just got word I’m playing this show next weekend at Lune. No cover so come out.

As a special present to all the peeps who check up on this blog even during update droughts. One of last year’s biggest and most searched-for tracks. I first heard this on Ikonika’s XLR8R mix way back in July. The vinyl finally dropped in December; no digital release for this one. Pure muscle.

This is a vinyl rip so…you know the deal. And no DL cause I’m prlly the only DJ in Shanghai playing this and wanna keep it that way. But you need to hear this track.

straight heat

What up tho, readers? It’s been a minute. Originally, I planned to update the site after the Western new year, but that didn’t happen.

However, this week = Chinese New Year. That means dragons and fireworks everywhere so I can play records as loud as I want. Also puts me in the mood to update the site and share some tunes.

Going all out today with this post. Straight heat.

The quality of this first track is a little shaky. Definitely not one to play out on a big system. Such an amazing original track, and this edit is fire. I finally tracked down a copy on vinyl so I’ll post the mp3 today.

Dee Edwards – Can’t There Be Love (Pilooski Edit)

Next up, a record I haven’t managed to track down. Both records on the Tri Angle label (founded by the dude who writes 20jazzfunkgreats) sold out almost immediately, everywhere. Really hoping for a repress of this one, and especially the oOoOO record.

Balam Acab – See Birds (Moon)

Grime riddim wut? Seriously anyone who freestyles/raps needs to jump on this shit and send the results to me. This isn’t the highest quality MP3 so you should cop the 10” or 12″ purple edition, out on one of my favorite labels – Butterz. They’re putting out loads of top-quality grime releases this year including Orangeade by Royal-T and some brilliant upcoming 12 inches by Swindle and others. Peep their mix on XLR8R here.

S-X – Woooo Riddim

The XX put out some of my favorite tracks of 2010, along with their remix of that Yacht track. Jamie XX on the solo tip also drops some instant classics. I won’t bother posting “NY Is Killing Me” because you should have that already, but this hasn’t dropped yet.

Falty DL – Hip Love (Jamie XX remix)

Also one of my favorite albums of 2010, Actress’s Splazsh was some out of this galaxy shit. “Machine & Voice” wasn’t on that LP, getting the EP treatment instead. Slow step to this shit.

Actress – Machine & Voice

I’m not sure Shanghai gets this one. I’ve played it in almost all of my DJ sets in the last two months and it generally clears the floor. To be fair, I borderline hated this song the first time I heard it, but it’s quickly grown into one of the year’s favorites. Wait till the G-Funk solo about 2/3 in and you’ll see what I mean. If only Night Slugs would repress Jam City’s White Label, then my record collection could be at least temporarily complete…
