Ceezy Mixtape for Love Bang 7!

Big up yo’self to Morgan and Smart Shanghai for running this article yesterday.

As promised, I’ve got #2 in the mixtape series for the Love Bang one year anniversary party. This one comes from 22 year-old Shanghainese hip hop producer Ceezy.

Young boi first got into hip hop when his dad bought him some Rappin’ 4-Tay and Da Lynch Mob CDs but “[his dad] didn’t know what that was.” He’s now been producing his own tracks for about three years, using Fruity Loops and a desktop PC.

A lot of his music sounds like if all the characters in Mario Kart were black jazz musicians from years past, who only race on sunny outdoor levels. If you like Nujabes, Samurai Champloo, or anything similar, you’ll dig this.

Ceezy describes his songs as “they sound like they’re made in bedroom and yes they are.”

I’ve been bumping this mix constantly since yesterday. Perfect for mornings, rainy days, or really whenever.  Starts off with some of Ceezy’s own dreamy jazz hip-hop productions then gets into some of his influences. Really happy to host this one.

Love Bang One Year Anniversary!

Been doing Love Bang at Dada for a god damn year now. Anniversary party this Saturday night at Dada with Ceezy and Blaise – gonna be massive.

Lots coming up this week on the site, including an exclusive mix by Ceezy and another by myself so stay tuned.

Gots to get to work (in the rain) now, but here’s the biggest track of the year so far for a lot of peeps. White-label limited pressing. Sample clearance issues…

Was lucky to bag one of these on Juno over the weekend. The interwebs says it’s a Brandy sample.

Moesha! UPN whaaaaat??

socket love for summer

Just chillin at the coffee shop and the electrical outlet caught on fire. Mad props to the barista who handled the fire-extinguisher like a pro.

Weird when something suddenly catches on fire in a quiet room.

Totally unrelated but I saw a 50+ year-old Chinese auntie rockin a shirt that said “LICKING DOORKNOBS IS ILLEGAL ON OTHER PLANETS!”

Quick post cause my working with limited internet access, but I got a quality jam for these end-of-spring nights. Deep house rework of Aaliyah’s classic “Rock the Boat.” It’s got to be the clap.

Soul Clap – Rock the Boat

Sub-culture party this weekend @ Shelter + Some tunes

Wanna show some love to my Sub-Culture fam, who hold it down harder than just about anyone in Shanghai (there’s no one else here doing dubstep nights aside from them and myself).

And this is the biggest dubstep monthly in Shanghai. Next month is gonna be huge too. Huge.

Unfortunately I’m gonna be swimming and eating pork-chops in Macau this weekend so I can’t make it, but for those in SH, this is not to be missed. Proper bass music from Vietnam.

And since I didn’t post for a hot minute, I gotta hit ya’ll with some fresh tracks.

blaise deville exclusive mix!

So the Love Bang One-Year Anniversary Party is going down on the 28th of May. Also happens to coincide with the three-year anniversary of this site…

Needless to say, will be a proper throwdown.

Leading up to the party, I’ll post three exclusive mixtapes – one by each of the guests, Blaise and Ceezy, and something by myself as well.

Really happy about this first one. Blaise never disappoints. Starts on the UK Funky tip and gets into heartbreak-halfstep territory at the end, all mixed with Swiss precision.  Peep the tracklist:

MIDI was ill/battery death

MIDI fest in Century Park was huge. Really fun. Was out there every day. Dancing in the grass all afternoon and well into the evening.

Highlights = Caliph-8 from the Philippines on some live MPC shit; beatmatching records with one hand while drumming out beats with the other…just next level.

Trix just getting sick and slowing down a looped house vocal sample to like 108bpm tempo and perfectly mixing in some heavy moombaton bangers. House music for grinding…

Yeah it’s fucking summer, suddenly as usual.

Sal on the sitar. Just out of nowhere. Really cool.

Boys Climbing Ropes set, really solid. Throwing out the constant mother’s day reminders.

Sick Star playing some classic and much needed rap jams. I remember Memory Lane by Nas and Shook by Mobb Deep.

DJ Cavia playing some fresh tracks and white bros just losing their shit in what became a dustbowl.

And though I’m not a huge drum & bass fan ConRank killed it, with a lot of swagger. More DJs need to MC. “When I raise my trigger finger…” yeah that was the last cut.

_________________________________________

So here’s my biggest fear these days. Every morning, my neighbors fetch a battery from the battery recycling box next to our door. They use this battery to prevent the door from locking (it locks really fast). Problem is, a battery breaks usually once a day..

As a kid I read the owner’s manual to my parents’ 1990 Toyota Camry front-to-back, probably twenty, thirty times. Standard long-trip reading material. I vividly remember the warnings in the battery section… “DANGER! Sulfuric Acid can burn through skin and cause blindness or death! Handle with extreme caution!” Keep in mind I was five or six at the time.

So with that imprinted on my brain, I’m always like “fuck! another battery! one of these days…” Door slams, battery explodes in half, sulfuric acid sprays everywhere.

Blindness or death.

So people in my apartment complex use so many batteries that we need a battery deposit box outside every building. But actually the batteries probably rupture way more often this way.

This was the track I wanted to end my MIDI set with and forgot. Still really happy with the set overall cause I dropped “Walk on the Wild Side” in its entirety and no one left. And I rapped a bit.
