Monthly Archive for September, 2011

weekend and next week is no work.

about to embark on a five-day adventure. the whole country goes on vacation next week, millions of people moving on trains and buses. local friend told me that all stores have to stop selling knives this week, government order… and PAIRS show friday. rooftop party on Saturday, this special evening at Dada on Sunday, a music festival in (???) on Monday I’m playing at with the homie Cavia// OTAKREW fam, then another music festival at the same place as MIDI last fall…emmm…not playing at that one though.

if you haven’t peeped it yet, the mixtape is ill -  whole tracklist right here.

Love Bang #10 Mixtape Dj Caution vs. Heatwolves by HeatWolves

Peep that then come out to the shows this weekend.. i got all kinds of crazy shit to dance to.

and another track I keep coming back to over the past few months. really feeling most of what Dark Sky produces -you will feel this kind of bass plus neon clouds just around sunset if you’re anywhere near the bund on saturday night.

and i’m playing psychedelic rock, soul, r&b, hip hop, and dubstep (late late) at this dada affair. lots of vinyl. much better choice than blacking out at 88 or one of the few other alternatives on a sunday night when half the town is gone and you don’t need to work in the morning.

PAIRS album release tmmr nite

`

a lot of people will travel to the netherworld of Pudong to see DJ Shadow play tmmr night. And yeah, Entroducting was really ill, he’s a legend, etc…

but for me, the show at Yuyintang looks much better. for one, i’m sick of seeing DJs. need to see some proper live music. two, PAIRS are my favorite live band in Shanghai. it’s the homeboy Rhys on drums and vocals, and F on guitar. Simple arrangement, really intense set. roughly 25 – 30 minutes of fucking raw rock and roll. there’s other bands playing too.

and it’s only RMB20, with their new album Summer Sweat available for donations. that + street beer > going to fuck-all pudong.  PAIRS are on at about 11. Suggest earplugs and aforementioned street-beers.

Here’s a couple tracks from that new album:

I asked Rhys three questions yesterday.

1. Heatwolves: if you had a playlist called sexual seduction, what would be the top five tracks on there?

Rhys:
1. Kes Band – Gentle Elf

2. Outkast – Ms. Jackson

3. Shellac – Prayer to god

4. The National – Conversation 16

5. Royal Headache – Honey Joy

2. Heatwolves: If you were in charge of black rabbit, which five acts would you bring (remembering that the festival tries to cater to everyone)?

Rhys: Not sure how I feel about this cater to everyone. Broad strokes are good, but I’d get worried about spreading myself too thin. I’d pick Royal Headache, The Go!Team, Li’l Wayne, Slipknot and Fuck Buttons.

3. Heatwolves: PAIRS gets to tour the world, and you can stop at any place, at any time, e.g. London 1213 then Tokyo 2056. Which five spots do you go to? also why, if possible.

Rhys:
Shanghai 2006 so I could hassle for a Dirty Three support.
Bendigo, Australia 2060 – just to see what’s not happening and what hasn’t changed.
Tianjin 3000 – visit the old haunts and swing on that swing chair in 13 Club.New York, anytime – just gotta go there, really. Sex and the City tour.

Shanghai 2011 so I could be part of the Hotter Then Teppanyaki set again, Fuck Pairs.

dat mixtape

Huge thanks to everyone who came to dada on saturday. Love Bang gets bigger and bigger each time. mad love.

in the tradition of our one-off “holiday edition” Love Bangs, I’m throwing down this Sunday night at Dada on the solo tip. everyone in China gets the week off work so if you’re not chasing…in Thailand or something, you best be at Dada for the usual hotpot of music. I’m also playing at the Ice Cream Truck Rooftop Party on Saturday afternoon/evening. Bringing a lot of vinyl out for that one…

and now I’m proud to present the mixtape DJ Caution and I have been working on for the last few weeks….

Syrup, Starfox Bass, Swamp R&B, Gucci Mane, original tracks, remixes, and edits, and more from The Super Ayi Cleaning Team Extended Fam. I’ll release the tracklist here in a couple days, have fun guessing until then.

We are killing the game with this one. No one else in China is touching our mixtape game. Enjoy – we put a lot of love into this.

Love Bang #10 Mixtape Dj Caution vs. Heatwolves by HeatWolves

new track by MC One Consciousness/other rappers get the sauce face

ya’ll know the boi MC One Consciousness (Charles) is the best rapper in Shanghai, foreign or local.

he’s rapping with DJ Caution and I tmmr night at Dada for Love Bang #10, so I threw him a couple beats to flow on and naturally he picked the Clams Casino beat (originally from Lil B’s “Motivation”).

Motivation (MC One Consciousness) by HeatWolves

that’s just a taste of what we’re dropping on this sunny Friday. we got the Love Bang #10 mixtape coming up later in the afternoon. Getting mastered as we speak..honestly no one is fucking with our mixtape game in this city, just wait. it’s full of original remixes, edits, and more.

THE BIG SHOW

so much going on this weekend…if you’re in Shanghai on Friday, you need to be at Mao Livehouse. The homegrls Cha Cha, part of the Subculture/Uprooted fam, and Cookie, manager of OTAKREW, put together a series of shows showcasing the best Chinese hip hop acts from all around the country. This is the final episode in the three part series – The Big Show.

I went to the first show a few Fridays ago at The Shelter, and honestly I haven’t had a night like that at Shelter in probably two years. Just huge vibes and great music (H20 on some crazy beatbox looping and live Korg action…hBd back-to-back with LJ….Cavia with the late night rock set that had people taking their clothes off…)

This Friday sees The Connection at a much bigger venue – Mao Livehouse. They need it, because one of the hip hop producers from Guangzhou is bringing his 12-piece band (!!!) Lots of other MCs, DJs, and producers, all Chinese, plus the homie Ceezy on the decks. They got cats from both the north and the south – really different places, perhaps even more so than east coast vs. west coast in the states.

I don’t recommend other people’s events much on this site. With that said, DO NOT SLEEP on this one. Tickets are RMB80 pre-sale or RMB100 at the door (remember, they’re bringing artists from all over China for this…it’s a good deal).

So don’t be on some lame bullshit and go to M2 or M1NT to listen to “I Got a Feeling,” because The Big Show is the state of hip hop in China, 2011, and it’s really good. Holla at’cha boy I will be there for sure.

this saturday night.

just came back from the copy shop…probably my favorite love bang poster yet. this one’s gonna be big – DJ Caution, MC One Consciousness, and myself…

Hip hop, Ghetto House, Dubstep, Dirty South, and a lot more. 10PM – ??

black rabbit afterglow

bummer if you didn’t make it to black rabbit in shanghai. huge weekend…best music festival ever?

cupcakes/sausages with lemonade, Ludacris killing it (great showman for sure), blue skies that looked taller than usual, Gold Panda blowing my mind, grandmaster flash stopping the record repeatedly and screaming at people “do i have 110%?!” then playing e.g. “smells like teen spirit” into “are you gonna go my way” (always, always hated that song…still remember the video, one of the last before my parents cancelled MTV), but actually not even trying to hate because dude played to the [huge, live...] crowd, Hebe possibly hearing our remix, half of Acid Pony Club in reckless, driveless car mode, Jered Leto and his OCD/mysophobia/refusal to shake hands and insistence on greeting by bumping elbows (#HOWIE_MANDELL), me barely sleeping thus leaving a suitcase somewhere in the Beijing airport (possibly TCBY? at security check?), realizing this just after i took my seat but remaining calm with meibanfa swag cause all music/laptop/essential shit was in my backpack and laughing “it’s all good, i’ll probably get it in six weeks” to the stewardess then having a [actually pretty hot for a security guard jiejie] security guard bring it to me ten minutes before the plane doors shut, chocolate yogurt with oreo at 9:00AM in the airport, Hip Hop Hijack managing to slowly lose an entire, big crowd by screaming “shake that booty booty” offbeat, hearing “Murder was the Case” at the Shelter afterparty, Ceezy’s army of adoring fans, proper tex-mex in Beijing with the homies Cavia and Dawei, surrounded by yuppies and me just visibly wrecked, rocking a bootleg, numberless Detroit jersey and pounding coffee, the NBA mixtape that i heard like fifteen times this weekend (the one with “party rock anthem,” “gettin jiggy with it,” and wack korean pop songs), eating giant BBQ fish on a ghost street, being like “wtf?” to the random dude who jacked then wore my hoodie and reclaiming that shit, Ceezy learning how to swim (breast stroke) in literally ten minutes after I told him “you just gotta get the rhythm, man,” downloading a lot of ill music then losing my “Popular” brand headphones like six hours later, the brilliance of the “Oblivion” stage, our mixer mysteriously getting upgraded from a DJM-600 to a DJM-800 overnight, five-star hotel breakfasts, and all the red bull and Jim Bean that got consumed…

that’s what comes to mind first. but also…

the beijing hip hop scene is way, way cooler. rappers have real beefs and talk mad, mad shit about each other. I can understand like 30% of it and it’s awesome. beijing/northern dudes are generally way tougher/cooler than shanghai/southern dudes. The security forces at the festival for example of the tougher point… Beijing’s = intimidating/clearly not to be fucked with, Shanghai’s = bused in and basically chillin.

party-goers in shanghai dance way more. Just comparing the gold panda tent in Beijing to Shanghai, Beijing set was [big] firefly sunset vibes and Shanghai was like a mini-rave (still my favorite set of the festival, his in Beijing…he had Ayis dancing). I do enjoy Beijing more and more each time I visit, but Shanghai pwns Beijing on the fun tip. Pwns.

where the fuck was the beer at the Beijing festival????? Shanghai had that locked, ironically with Qingdao.

mad, mad love to Split Works, the OTAKREW homies Ceezy and Cavia, Uprooted Sunshine fam, all the cool characters I met in Beijing, all my friends who came out, everyone who came to our set (we smashed it in Shanghai, thanks to a really cool crowd), and Xiao Zhong from Pairs for holding down our stage like whoa.

only one [minor] sour note – a big fuck you to the m1nt bouncers who wouldn’t let Ceezy and I save three crucial set-up minutes by cutting through your VIP area at 4:00 IN THE AFTERNOON when said VIP area consisted of a few whites watching soccer and several bored, unfriendly bouncers, ya’ll are dicks. this was after the SB journalists from udig.cn kept us waiting for an interview on some “we’re almost there” bullshit when “we’re almost there” meant at least twenty minutes that we didn’t have.

other than that, the weekend was nothing but love, and the best in a really, really long time. love the randomness/juxtaposition and i can’t imagine how big Black Rabbit will be in years to come (i heard this is the first of a multi-year contract??), but the first was truly something special.

something chill for those still soaking in the weekend.

Balam Acab – Now Time

Balam Acab is brilliant and I recommend copping his LP on the label of the year – Tri Angle.

note that picture is from Lake Michigan three summers ago but that’s the mood.

BLACK RABBIT (we is in Beijing)

BURRRRRRR.

hope i don’t miss my flight…

this Optimo mix is helping me pack. of of my favorite mixes of recent years…i’m gonna leave this up for one day. they are playing in Shanghai on Sunday at Black Rabbit. literally some of the best DJs ever.

fucking ever, mang.

black rabbit redux.

get ready cause when 2012 hits you better know how to motherfucking swim. but for real like no one knows how to swim here. #SURVIVEANDPROCREATE

any john updike fans in the  house?

gonna continue repping black rabbit cause there’s only four/five days depending on which city you wake up in.

some tracks today by the electronic artist i’m most excited to see live – Mount Kimbie. Pitchfork might call this “bedroom dubstep,” “post-dubstep,” or whatever…it’s really, really good. if you’re into James Blake you’ll love this.

they’re not playing a DJ set either. proper live set with hardware, synths, drum machines, etc. yes. i would pay RMB260 to see these dudes play by themselves. i paid RMB200 to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club last night and they fucking. sucked. was just thinking “man, if this was some punk club in LA in the 70s, singer dude would get rocked with so many glass bottles right about now…”

i know i posted “Mayor” before, but it’s so good i gotta re-up cause they’re coming this weekend.

————————

One more track that’s not Black Rabbit related, but the beat comes from a Gucci Mane remix, and Gucci Mane is always, always relevant here.  One of my favorites of the past few months, ever since I heard it on the Nguzunguzu postcast for XLR8R. Sorry for the quality, it’s unreleased and comes ripped straight from that podcast.

Jodie – Moments in Heartbreak (LOL Boys Edit)

more black rabbit festival music – GOLD PANDA

not much time to write. love this track. dude is playing at Black Rabbit, live on the MPC (drum machine). expecting a really cool set.

Gold Panda – You

you can find me at the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show tonight at Mao Livehouse and the Black Rabbit Warmup Party tmmr at Shelter, spinning some good music with DJ Caution, Drunk Monk, Siesta, Cavia/Ceezy, and more.

chinese pop songs remixed//BLACK RABBIT

what. up.

fuck an apology, just gonna hit em with the remix. my boy Caution and I did this in about twenty hours. we sampled crickets from outside my apartment building at 3am and used them as percussion.

the track is by Hebe, a Taiwanese pop singer who’s playing at Black Rabbit festival this weekend in Shanghai, along with Ludacris, Mount Kimbie, Titus Androndicus, Gold Panda, Saigon, and a lot of other artists I’m feeling. four stages.

Love (we love bang remix) by HeatWolves

tickets are RMB260 pre-sale here. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS. Don’t be that dude who just ate avocados + Gouda and got a foot massage on Sunday while everyone else was wilding out at the biggest music festival in Shanghai ever.

i’m also playing at the festival in both Shanghai and Beijing, along with Grandmaster Flash on the NBA Stage. pump. apparently Grandmaster Flash has a list of about 200 songs that none of the other DJs can play. they’re all the most famous 80′s/90′s rap songs but likely no Dub.STEP and or JUKE so I won’t have to feel the wrath of the grandmaster.

gonna post music by Black Rabbit artists and more exclusives all week.
