i picked up a travel toothbrush set from the train station on my way to Hangzhou last weekend. They only had one brand – Darlie Brand “Black People Toothpaste” (黑人牙膏).

Yep. It’s actually called that, and there’s a picture of a smiling black man on the tube.

I asked a bunch of my colleagues “why is it called ‘black people toothpaste’” – They all laughed and said “because black people have very white teeth.”

Is that racist? Are positive stereotypes racist? Chinese people are good at math, black people have very white teeth? I don’t know..

But I do know that Madvillainy is one of my favorite albums ever. MF Doom x Madlib together on this classic from 2004. Played this at the end of the night at Dada on Friday, which btw was a great, great night. May be starting a reggaeton night in Shanghai soon, stay posted.
