Gil Scott Heron / DJ Rashad – Going Home

Does anyone today write songs like Gil Scott Heron did back in 1971? In a world of 2 Chainz and Gucci Mane, we’re lucky to get a bit of social commentary on tracks like Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools.” So let’s not forget the OG of the rap game, Gil Scott Heron, who sadly passed away in 2011.

One of my all-time favorite albums, Heron’s beautiful 1971 “Pieces of a Man” featured the gem “Home is Where The Hatred Is.” Here we are over forty years later with a version by Chicago’s juke-music don DJ Rashad that shows how to remix a classic with class, restraint, and respect.

Back from a quick trip to Chongqing out in West China. Wild city, that one. Saw a dog playing in a pile of electrical wire, climbed mountains, dodged thieves, watched a bloody brawl from an uncomfortably close distance, walked on sky bridges above tree canopies, got ignored by stone-faced locals, ate late-street BBQ on plates instead of skewers, met late-nite breakdance gangs in the streets, and got hotpot broth and all its numbing qualities in my eye.

Shout out to Mike at CQScene for all the help and for holding it down hard when the fracas erupted, everyone who came to the show at NUTS, DJ Doshy and JCC (so good!), Louie, Lost Unknown, Sunshine (a person*, not the actual sun), Gucci and MC One Con, topography, that noodle guy the first night..

* Odd English names like “Sunshine” make for easy email searching.

Yo how is a club gonna have a wi-fi AND a Serato SL3 box but no booth monitor for the DJ??

Said club also had a fake* costume-contest in the middle of my set. Very fashion. One girl was Marilyn, or maybe Lady Gaga..that lead to downloading “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” on aforementioned wi-fi. Here’s that and some other songs with “Diamond” in their name.

Last year the legendary psych-rock band The Flaming Lips released a limited edition album on a USB flash drive.

Sounds normal, except that the drive was buried deep inside a life-sized, lemon-flavored gummy human skull, inside a marijuana-flavored brain…you have to eat through the brain to reach the USB that holds four exclusive songs.

These were $150 each. Sold out.

Then they released a followup….in a gummi fetus. This is marketing.

You know I love treats…here’s one of their old songs. A classic.

been working on a new mixtape full of tracks from my “Take It Home” playlist. it’s leaning more toward contemporary sex music like The Dream, Jodeci, H-Town, etc., so I couldn’t really fit some of these classics in there.

would be a shame to not share them though. Minnie Ripperton god damn what an amazing voice, tragic that she died of breast cancer at just 31 years old…

Morgan, aka Da Admiral, aka Desert Fuck Eagle, aka Dave VanBurren.. the editor of SmartShanghai and a dude whose presence will be missed in this city. He’s leaving Shanghai and moving to dat northside to start SmartBeijing.

i’m a bit worried he may have to return to Shanghai though because the quality of English-language journalism and websites in Beijing is so high…i’m not sure the market can handle another… seems redundant. I mean, Beijinger? They are killing the game. Look at that web design…that’s proto web 4.0.

pretty much every DJ in Shanghai is playing at Shelter tonight for this *free* send-off party, including Armtrick, ROM (Ice-9), Conrank, Drunk Monk, Lon, TzuSing, Hamacide, and myself.

So come down with some blue-box West cigarettes and gin & tonic tokens for Desert Fuck Eagle aka the dude who wrote this piece of primary-source journalism.

One of my favorite Shanghai moments was seeing Morgan’s band Boys Climbing Ropes play as The Velvet Underground on Halloween last year. Next-level.
