Sunday Sleaze

Hanappe_Bazooka-13

Another fast weekend in Shanghai. Big thanks to everyone who came out to Shanghai All-Stars on Friday night! Next one is on February 7th.

Here’s a few tunes from my late-nite set at The Shelter on Friday. I got inspired by DJ Ozone’s 80s hip-hop set last week and wanted to mix early 80s hip hop with the Paradise Garage disco/morning music sound from around the same time in NYC. That early hip hop was so much more creative and positive than the “pop a molly get turnt up” shit that dominates the charts nowadays (not that I don’t play that sometimes). Time and place for everything.

I first heard “Messages From The Stars” when Stones Throw Records boss Peanut Butter Wolf played at The Shelter last month. His set, basically a retrospective of dope music from the second half of the 20th Century, convinced me that Serato Video doesn’t have to be corny. Easily one of the best shows of 2013. Shout out to Henri for requesting and identifying this one!

WHAT’S GOOD IN SHANGHAI THIS WEEKEND SEPT 5 – 8 // 周末有啥好的?

motorcyclegang

Remember how it was 106 degrees a month ago? After the hottest summer ever on record in Shanghai for the 2013, fall crashed the party like a gang of bros rocking fake New-Era hats. But instead of bringing warm cans of Qingdao, fall brings rain, cold fronts, crumbling, toe-destroying pavement, deadly ammonia leaks, and a lot of good as well.

The question is not “How is the weather in Shanghai?” but “What’s worse, Shanghai summer or Shanghai winter?” This place is known for a short spring and fall sandwiched between long, tortuous winters and summers. Enjoy these fall weeks.

And shout out to subway Line 11, shout out to public transportation. Now it’s really simple to transfer within and from the South Side, AKA the best side, to Line 2 at Jiangsu Lu. For example, if you live at Jiaotong University and wanna get to Jing An, you can take line 11 one station to Jiangsu Lu, transfer, and roll one more station to Jing An. Or you can take bus 76 just opposite CityShop on Panyu.

As usual there’s a lot of shit on this weekend and some serious gems, so let’s take a look at what the 周末 has to offer.

FRIDAY – 1950s/60s Music/Rockabilly/Old Records Played By Someone Who Knows The Deal @ The Shelter

Keb Barge is apparently that dude. A pioneer who’s been DJing since the 1970s, he strictly drops good old tunes on vinyl 45s. He doesn’t like house or hip hop and won’t be playing any of that, but you’ll hear a bunch of classic tunes you’ve never heard before. Surely you’ll hear some hip hop though, with this dope, all-Shanghainese support lineup featuring The Grumpy Pig AKA V-Nutz playing a rare set, Ben Huang, plus the homies Ceezy and HBD. You can read a lot more about the show over at Smart Shanghai. Only 50RMB – highly recommended. On the get-ready tip, here’s one of my favorite Northern Soul tunes.

The Trips – Love Can’t Be Modernized

FRIDAY – Standup Comedy with Joe Klocek

This one’s put on by the Kung Fu Comedy Club. Only been to one of their shows, Butch Bradley last fall, and that was great. Peep this YouTube video of tonight’s guest pwning a heckler. It’s 200RMB at the door. Damn, comedians can charge a lot at the door. I wonder if in five years there’ll be loads of wack comedians here bringing down the market price?

And the new DJ booth should be up and running at Dada tonight – what do you think? Get down there Saturday night for Popasuda if you’re into dancehall and music without English lyrics.

SATURDAY – TRAPPED ON A BOAT [PARTY]

Saturday night, boat party on the Yuangpu. I DJed at a boat party for NYU last Friday and that was mad fun; like 400 kids dancing on the top deck. Dry boat but everyone was wilding out regardless. Saturday night’s affair has a full bar on deck(s) plus music by Yen, Caution, CJ, and myself. Music on each floor, lots of booze, and the beautiful Huangpu River with dual skylines chillin in the background. There’s a few tickets left over at Dragon’s website, hop on that. RMB200 with free drinks and RMB500 for free-flow alcohol including champagne. It’s a three-hour voyage, with an afterparty at Shanghai Rose, a century-old, historically-preserved Victorian spot that housed the Shanghai Rowing Club back in 1905. Chill architecture. That party is RMB50 with a drink or free if you’re on the pleasure boat. That’s got The Super Ayi Cleaning Team playing erotic dance music and Xujiahui Trap all night. Strictly for the North Bund ratchets.

The North Bund is a funny place. Lot of ratchets, for real. Last time this lady tried to get me to come in her bar and was like “don’t worry i’m not gonna kidnap you and sell you or anything” and her pink-faced and obese lao laowai husband was like “yerrrrrrr come on in.” There were babies crawling around, all quite surreal.

Usually it’s a flower ayi trying to sell you a rose, but for this flyer we flipped the already-bizarre reality into a flower selling aunties. Art by the always on-point whoiscecilia and myself.

SATURDAY – HOUSE AND DISCO FROM TIM SWEENEY (BEATS IN SPACE) @ 390

Repping DFA Records and the hugely influential Beats In Space radio show, currently on episode #693, it’s New York’s Tim Sweeny. Support from Mau Mau, American Booze DJs, Santo Chino, and Lindberg. Looks to be the spot for house and disco on Saturday. Peep this Boiler Room mix by dude, just came out three days ago. Only RMB60 with one drink.

Saturday during the day there’s a flea-market at Cotton’s on Xinhua Lu that promises pop up shops, BBQ, music, etc.. Dope venue so worth stopping by if you stay in the South Side/Changning hood.

Alright there’s more but I’m done. Hit the streets, see you out there. Get that 2GT and holler at dem North Bund Ratchets. Will end this one with some brand new tunes from local producers.

Here’s a house tune by DJ Doggy, repping Anhui. This one out on the DOT Records sampler that just dropped.

And this serious disco burner by two of my favorite French people, Laura Ingalls and El’se. No DL on this but I’m sure if you ask them nicely they’ll hook you up. It’s out on Disques Pony.

El’se + Laura Ingalls – Crydgejohn

哦!还有一件事请想告诉你们…Tonight on Shanghai’s English-language TV channel, catch the world premiere of a really *special* cooking show starring yrs truly, DJ Caution, and our good friend Sal, who’s written for this site before. Sal also happens to have his monthly Latin/World Tunes party at Dada Saturday night as well, with guest super-friend DJ Cavia also reppin’ the An Hui. Anyway the TV show premieres tonight on ICS at 8:30PM Shanghai time. That’s 8:30AM Kalamazoo time, a perfect way to start your Friday in the office. Something like an adult sesame street in the Shanghai hood. Steam it live over at ICS. Here’s a shot from when we were cutting records in the kitchen while cutting up some vegetables.

Club KTV Shanghai – CLOSED. Lessons Learned.

972076_179655715541955_360127641_n

It’s the season for clubs closing in Shanghai – who’s next??? Could it be all of Yongkang Lu? Arkham? Your apartment party? Better save some trap dollars for a rainy day.

KTV was a house/disco club in a renovated karaoke parlor that stayed open for about a year. Their strict sound was European disco and house, with some impressive bookings like Mike Simonetti from Italians Do It Better and Chez Damier. Cool concept that may have worked in Spain or something, but in Shanghai this unfortunately was not enough to pay the rent, and the club just announced its closure. Perhaps this was, as some have offered, a consequence of an supersaturated market – too many clubs and promoters and not enough patrons. Or perhaps KTV fucked up by just not enough promoting to different crowds or working with other promoters…I believe the problem lies in the latter.

Personally, I can’t say I feel terrible for Club KTV, considering this convo I had with someone working at the club back in April, when I asked if we could do a Love Bang party there:

“…everything imported. sorry to sound arrogant but not interested in djs who play everywhere in sh. thats my partners opinion im just a messanger. (sic)”

These are nice people who grossly erred in judgement, assuming that a small crowd of Europeans could support a club in a city with some of the most expensive rents in the world, and with loads of clubbing options. At least that’s what i assume they did, as they wouldn’t bring in outside promoters or promote to locals. I never once saw anything about KTV on Weibo, even in the heyday before Weixin eclipsed Weibo. I mean, look at their flyers – this is absolutely meaningless to a local who isn’t in touch with the small disco and house scene. No Chinese, not even an address.

ktv2

So…there’s gonna be some kind of razor at a KTV? It’s a shaving party? A cutting party? Goth-night? Is this at Mao Livehouse? I’m a foreigner and without context I don’t even know what this means.

Whereas Arkham struggles to draw a crowd to local nights w/no headliner, they at least got their shit together to draw an impressive local crowd to e.g. their Thursday night hip hop party. I heard KTV tried to reach out to some other promoters at the end, but by then it was too late. Here’s what we can learn by this:

1) Chinese promo is essential. How can you ignore over 95% of the market???  Dada and STD do well because they promote to local crowds.

2) In a world where Perry’s offers free beer and an always-packed bar full of international peeps, bars must do something to stand apart. A renovated KTV is cool, but that alone won’t draw enough customers to keep the doors open. Club owners should always ask themselves “why would anyone want to come to my bar instead of one of the hundreds of other places in town??”

3) It’s cool to have an artistic vision, like pure disco and house in a quirky setting, but in an often tacky city like Shanghai, you have to make compromises sometimes if you wanna stay afloat. That means sometimes working with people you don’t necessarily think are doing the coolest shit on the planet. You can learn a lot by working with peeps doing something different.

4) [most important] If you run a club, FFS don’t shut out all the other promoters in town and think that importing some vinyl nerds from Europe is somehow gonna matter more than working with local promoters. Fucking dumb. I wanted to do a party at KTV but they were like “naw we’re good.” Welp, guess not bruv!

People make mistakes. I didn’t consider the wrong impression some may get when they see a party called “Love Bang” at a gay-ish bar. And I thought like 500 people would just turn up to the first pool party. This has been the summer of “don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” Lessons for the youth.

SUNDAY ON SOUNDCLOUD | RARE ASIAN DISCO

LOVEBANG28WEB

ok no more dog photos, for now. moving on to ducks.

peep this poster, inspired by Hong Kong’s giant floating duck, now sadly deflated. i won’t appear at this Love Bang because I’m headed to Beijing with Sal for Popasuda on the same night! See you at Dada Beijing on Friday.

hongkongduck

Alright onto the music. Today we’ve got an absolutely DOPE mix of rare Asian disco. no idea what any of these tracks are. some in Mandarin, Japanese, Fujianhua, Thai, and unknown languages from the Pacific Rim. pretty sure Daft Punk just ripped off some rare Thai disco when they wrote “Get Lucky.”

and if you’re looking for something a bit more 现代, peep this mix from Kingdom, ahead of his “Vertical XL” EP release. dude mixes with Rihanna with underwater bass sludge and even throws in that guilty pleasure of a Top 40 song about eating p – “Kisses Down Low” by Kelly Rowland. this is how I want pop music to sound.

enjoy the sunday. man done turnt up the gale force wind machine ya heard.

Also, EXCLUSIVE mix from DJ Conrank coming tmmr.

ROOM RECORDING FROM LAST WEEK’S VINYL NIGHT

heijiaoshehuiWEB

Huge vibes at the first round of 黑胶社会 last Thursday. So much so that we’re doing it on a Saturday next month – June 8th.

We recorded the whole night last Thursday with a Zoom H4n portable recorder placed up in the ceiling. Please note that we recorded this with a mic, in a basement, so it’s not the cleanest sound; but that fits the aesthetic of the night. Here’s a sample of what went down, and what to expect on the third Thursday of every month.

no tracklist, but feel free to add your guesses in the comments!

Thundercat “Without You” and Busta Rhymes “Twerk It”

WATCH OUT FOR UMBRELLA THIEVES. THEY LURKIN.

Love this new track from Thundercat so much. Works magic on the floor too. Brainfeeder really one of my favorite labels.

Also feeling this new Busta Rhymes “Twerk It.” Read loads of complaints/hate about this one on the web, but this and disco a la “Get Lucky” will be the sound this summer. It’s also way better than most new dancehall. Sounds like Pharrell made this beat with water droplets. Also, Busta Rhymes is Jamaican so it’s not like he’s just jumping on this style like Snoop Lion. Here’s the dirty version.

You’ll definitely hear this at Dada tonight for Papasuda so come down to get down.

SUNDAY ON SOUNDCLOUD | KINGDOM – “Bank Head”

Kingdomcover1

So that live blogging from the BBQ cookoff never happened. Within thirty minutes of  arrival, I crashed on a skateboard and started bleeding from my back and wrist then got chased and bitten by a Scottish Sheep Dog with an enormous D. But otherwise a great day in the sun, with pure meats, whiffle ball, and reverse culture shock.

Starting today, I’m going to feature some of the best cloud seedlings on Soundcloud, beginning with an upcoming release by one of my favorite producers. Kingdom fuses some of my favorite genres, R&B, electro, Baltimore, and dubstep, but manages to sound way classier than his peers. This is the darker cousin of R&B (no racist), with similar DNA as newer releases by Shlohmo but much clubbier and stripped-back. Super distinctive and immediately identifiable style. His 2010 release on Night Slugs remains one of my favorites from that label, and I expect he’ll eventually get picked up by some pop stars and major labels. Tracks like “Let You Know” make me think that’s what he’s after.

I’d been listening to this track from his upcoming EP on Fade To Mind (sister label of Night Slugs) and noticed a familiar name on the art production credits – Kim Laughton from ROM! The VJ who looks like white Jesus, you know who I’m talking about. He’s seriously stepped up his art game in the past few years and now he’s done this stunning album cover. Reminds me a bit of the final battle in Akira. Definitely copping the full EP on May 28th, can’t wait.

Mondays With Cats

Happy Monday ya’ll.

desiocat

Have you seen these cats around town? They’re the work of Desio. Makes sense because Shanghai really is a cat city. You can’t work more than five minutes at night in this town without seeing a street cat (or a 老外, these days).

I’m a big fan of quality graffiti like this (and cartoon cats). Two minutes later on the same street, a five-year old boy walked out of his parents’ shop and took a huge piss on the front steps, so I don’t believe this art harms the neighborhood’s image.

I don’t know anything about I VA. My gf gave me these tracks and I can only find their EP on bandcamp, tagged with “low-fi boogie Russian Federation.” Pretty amazing.
