Much love to everyone who came to Dada last Saturday night. Didn’t expect that wild of a night…We got home at like 6.40am. Anyway, here’s what the party sounded like from 11.30pm–1.30am. DJ Caution x Heatwolves live on two Technics and Serato. Recorded with a Zoom H2 mic in the corner. No tracklist.
[update: the first one was a banger and we're doing this again on Thursday, March 19]
What up. So, Love Bang recently got the opportunity to do a bi-weekly Thursday party at Lola Club – the same place Derrick Carter, Josh Wink, KiNK, and the like play when they come to Shanghai. Funny side story, these French dudes I know are making this documentary about underground music in Shanghai, and they asked Derrick Carter for an interview or a big up, and Derrick was like “Your shit, is not my shit”.
Anyway. We’re taking over two Thursdays and flying this starship through a detour from their usual program of house. It’s gonna be eclectic, but not as much as a Love Bang party. Lots of ’80s sleaze, breakdance tunes, music inspired by space travel, all kinds of good shit you can groove to. The place has a Funktion One soundsystem, one of the world’s best. Really looking forward to the first flight this Thursday.
Address: 570 Yongjia Lu, near Yueyang Lu | 永嘉路570号4号楼, 近岳阳路
The sound of VELVET STARSHIP is like..
Mary Jane Girls – Candy Man (12″ Mix)
Casco – Cybernetic Love
Midnight Star – Operator
Skream – Rollercoaster ft. Sam Frank
Prince – Clouds [btw if you haven't peeped the new Prince album you need to get on that]
And we’ll go much deeper into the cybernetic funk galaxy, and even play some classics… Been digging a LOT for this one.
So, unlike a Love Bang party, you won’t hear anything like this:
Chief Keef – Citgo
No tech-house either
Sorry it’s been a minute since the last post. Between work and digging for music, haven’t had much time to blog. But Saturday night, it’s going down. Hip hop, star-funk, party trax, classic Chinese love songs by DJ Caution, Dave K, T-Plus, and introducing Li Bao Guo the raccoon cab driver… This is the place to be in Shanghai on Saturday.
Here’s an example of what you might hear on the warm-up tip..
Stevie Wonder – All I Do
Hey so my label Love Bang just made a new sweatshirt for winter. This one is inspired by all those homeless cats in Shanghai and all the soon to be baby-mama cats howling in heat out on the streets.
We’re releasing it Thursday night at this vinyl bar called URVC in Jing’an. The show will broadcast live on the uDance Radio website. The place is rad. There’s like 30,000 records on the walls and the soundsystem is like a fine velvet cake.
That’s the upstairs bit. Here’s the sweatshirt design.
We’ve got 25 of these sweatshirts available, plus free stickers for everyone who comes through. AND SOME TREATS.
So yeah, that’s 8pm on Thursday night. 999 Xikang Lu, near Anyuan Lu. DJ sets by DJ Caution, Will A, myself, and some special guests…
Come say what up! It’s free. And drinks are buy-one-get-one until 11pm.
Hey sorry it’s been a minute since the last post. Been busy writing other places…
As far as new music, I’m playing the hottest old and new jams every Thursday night live on a Chinese internet radio station called uDance. You can stream that live every Thursday from 8pm-midnight (Shanghai time) on the uDance website.
And if you’re in Shanghai, you can just come hang out at the spot. It’s a really dope new vinyl bar/café called URVC. They’ve got thousands of records for sale, plush couches, and a ridiculous soundsystem with speakers from 1972 and amplifiers by brands I can’t pronounce. We get guest DJs in every Thursday too, including some of the incoming DJs playing around Shanghai on the weekend.
And it’s free to get in, with buy-one-get-one drinks until midnight. So stream that live or drop in and say what up.
Been a minute since we’ve dropped a new Love Bang mixtape…
Here’s a double dose of darkness. Death Disco from myself, Horror-Hop from DJ Caution, Chinese Ghost Songs, and a few PSAs too…
No tracklist but I’ll guarantee you haven’t heard half these jams, and they’re all dope.
Here’s where you can find us DJing this weekend:
Oct 31, Halloween
DJ Caution @ Club NASA, Chengdu
Heatwolves @ TICT Warehouse Party, Shanghai
Nov 1, Saturday
Heatwolves & Caution @ Shanghai International Beer Festival @ Wharf 1643
Everyone @ Come Correct Three-Year Anniversary, The Shelter
Hey so people in China don’t have to work on Monday because it’s the Mid-Autumn Festival, a.k.a. the Mooncake Holiday. So we’re throwing a Sunday night party at this really cool new cafe/bar/radio station in Jing’an. If you wanna read more about the place, check this link here.
DJ Caution and myself playing hip hop, moon house, bass, and classic Chinese songs on a seriously nice soundsystem. Affordable drinks, cheap coffee, and vinyl for sale. Cool place. Goes from 9pm–3am. Free entry.

Last fall my crew Love Bang brought Egyptian Lover to Shanghai for a live show and we packed out 390 Bar and had Mr. Egypt banging out beats on the 808, rapping, and dancing like a pharaoh at the same damn time. We don’t bring international acts in that often, but next week we’re linking up with our good friends Split Works to bring one of our favorite artists of recent years – Pictureplane. These shows are going down at two of the best venues in China – Arkham, Shanghai and Dada Bar, Beijing.
Wait, who is this bro? First off, he’s not a DJ, he’s a producer and he’s playing live and singing. Peep some of his tunes to start.
Pictureplane – Trance Doll
Pictureplane – Gang Signs
Emotional dance music made by a DIY punk kid. It all sounds like a rave in a computer junkyard after the end of the world. Genderless, high-tech, and neon, all with a coat of static and noise. The first PICTUREPLANE track I ever heard was his remix of HEALTH’s “Lost Time.” Years later I bought a used copy of his 2009 album Dark Rift oh a whim while record shopping in Kalamazoo. I played that record non-stop for months and it’s still in heavy rotation.
The sequel to that album, Thee Physical, came out in 2011 and sounds much bigger due to co-production by Jupiter Keyes, the guitarist from LA Noise Rock band HEALTH. This one further explores the weird links between technology, gender, emotion, and trance.
Pictureplane – Real Is A Feeling
Pictureplane – Sex Mechanism
PICTUREPLANE grew up playing in bands, and for several years lived in a Denver art community/DIY warehouse space called Rhinoceropolis before relocating to Brooklyn, where he’s working on his third album, releasing clothing lines with Mishka, remixing and producing for other artists, and frequently collaborating with peeps like GRIMES. A$AP Rocky and AraabMuzik showed up and played a set at his party.
Pictureplane – Real Is A Feeling (GRIMES Remix)
So he’s coming to China to play at Love Bang. We’re going all out with this – Pictureplane + three of Shanghai’s most on-point resident DJs, huge sound system, lights, inflatable animals, treats, errrrrythang.
March 7th @ Arkham Shanghai w/DJ Caution, Misloop, and Heatwolves
March 8th @ Dada Beijing w/DJ Caution and Heatwolves
