Super Ayi Cleaning Team Feburary Mixtape

We’re doing a new mixtape every month, and this one dropped just in time for Valentine’s Day. It’s called HE▲RTBE▲TS [阿姨爱巢]

The first half is mostly new songs, heavy on the bass, and the second half is straight-up babymaking jams. Lots of throwbacks.

This mix took forever to make because we couldn’t decide which direction to take, but we’re super happy with the outcome – so are our Ayi friends!

Free download on Soundcloud.  Put it on and make some sweet love.

Love Bang 14 Lovers Caption Contest

It’s almost that time again…another Love Bang party at Dada before we move to The Shelter for March (then back to Dada on April 7th). Thanks to all who checked out our latest mix – we’ve got another one coming sooner than you think.

We want to give away some free drank at this Saturday’s show, so we’re doing a caption contest a la The New Yorker. All you need to do is fill in the dialogue bubbles for the boy and the girl. Could be one word, one sentence, or a paragraph. Please no essays/extended discourse – we’re busy working on a mix.

You can leave your dialogue in the comments section on this page. Just say “Boy: ….. Girl: ……” or, you can send @热狼isHeatwolves on Sina Weibo.

First prize gets a bottle of Smirnoff vodka, second prize gets three bottles of beer. We’ll announce the winner on Friday.

We’re spinning love songs from all genres on Saturday, so expect some Motown, some hip hop, a little dubstep, house, and of course some slow-jams on the late-nite tip. Some surprises in store too, and a warm-up set by the mystical DjMrWhite!

new mixtape from the SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM – LOVE U LONG TIME

cover art for "LOVE U LONG TIME" mixtape by Shanghai's SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM

Here’s the reason for the lack of posts recently – I’ve been working on this mix right here with the homie DJ Caution and our Chinese auntie friends. We’re super proud of this one, and confident to say that no one has done anything quite like this before. It all started when we realized that the 1983  mid-tempo hip-hop track “World’s Famous” by Malcom McLaren, the same dude who did “Buffalo Gals,” sounds fucking ill slowed down to 88 beats per minute (bpm) from its original 107 bpm.

Then we went through about 200 more tracks trying to find ones that sounded just right when pitched way down. Lots of songs sounded like complete garbage, but some sounded amazing at slow speeds – sometimes even better than the original track. Italo disco, boogie, and mid-tempo hip hop worked best. These songs have heavy analogue synthesizer-bass that sounds warm and deep when pitched down to the extreme, unlike songs made with software plugins/emulators that sound awful under these conditions. If you slow down most modern “electro,” (the kind that people have in mind when they ask the DJ to play something “dirty”) you can hear the audio bits breaking apart like a spilled box of digital Cherrios. But not with the tracks on this mix.

“Built for rainy days and purple sunsets – the January 2012 Chinese New Year mix by Shanghai’s SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM members DJ Caution and Heatwolves. A carefully selected bag of italo disco, house, and hip hop, slowed down 30% and cut with some dusty old VHS tapes from around the world. Slow, bass-heavy, smokey, and sexy.”

Tracklist after the jump – hope you enjoy! We’re doing mixes every month this year, this is only the beginning. Continue reading ‘new mixtape from the SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM – LOVE U LONG TIME’

Back In Shanghai//Love Bang #13 This Weekend

Jet lag can feel like a giant bird’s wing pushing down on my shoulder, forcing me down into an inevitable deep sleep. Not a mean-spirited bird, but an invincible one nonetheless. Even at like 3PM, Jet Lag > Coffee x 10,000. Thought I beat it when I stayed out till 7AM on Friday after Tsu Sing’s Stockholm Syndrome party at Dada, but no. That party was great though. I walked in at 2:20AM and acid house was just pounding through the subs. Nice to see people playing house music that doesn’t suck. And a little bit of hip hop got dropped too..yes.

Such a necessary trip back to America. Shanghai can hit you much harder than jet lag..and for all the late nights, the peanut smoothies, the cheap cabs, the ability to do just about anything at anytime, there’s no home-cooking from mama, no blue skies with purple sunsets and stars, no cheap breakfast cereal (Cinnamon Toast Crunch is over $10 a box at CityShop), and no driving around listening to rap music. True, you can keep CDs in your bag and ask your 司机 to put them in the deck while you ride through the grey city in that $2 cab, but it’s not quite the same.

Here’s some of what I was listening to, cruising around Kalamazoo, Michigan.

hood dreams in hangzhou.

What up though. Hangzhou we are coming this Friday night – our first time doing Love Bang outside of Shanghai. So pumped to throw down at Code Space, one of the better venues I’ve seen in China. It’s a renovated warehouse with glass floors and a train that actually rolls around through the club. You can ride the train.

Big up to Elements for bringing us out there. I went out to their Halloween party (same venue) a few weekends ago and they got 350 people out on a Sunday night (!!!)

It’s DJ Caution, MC One Consciousness, and myself rolling out there on Friday evening. If you wanna make the trip to Hangzhou with us, holla at me – we’d love to have some friends from Shanghai join us.

If you don’t know what a Hangzhou is, it’s a “small” city (still like 6 million + i think) about 45 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed train. Round-trip train will cost you about RMB175 and you can get a cheap hotel or even stay in a bathhouse for less than RMB100 a night (with massage!). People say West Lake in Hangzhou is one of China’s most beautiful places, but the lake is too dirty to swim in so I don’t understand this..but regardless, the city is chill, and not a bad place to spend a much-needed weekend outside of Shanghai.

Some rap for you this Monday, starting it off with the second track from Slugabed’s set last weekend at the Shelter. When he dropped some Dipset I knew it was on. Produced by Araab Muzik.

Dipset – Salute

And a track off the new Drake album. Haters gonna hate, whatever. Drake comes pretty correct for a commercial rapper and I feel like he’s got a lot of creative control for a major label artist (he’s got Jamie XX producing one of the tracks, The Weeknd on a couple others..) Dude sums up his attitude pretty well in this Just Blaze-produced track when he says “Know that I don’t make music for [dudes] who don’t get pussy/so those are the ones that I found diss me or overlook me,” which goes pretty well with my friend’s comment “the biggest ‘get the fuck outta here’ goes to kids who act like rap died in ’96.” Fuck the backpackers.

this saturday night.

just came back from the copy shop…probably my favorite love bang poster yet. this one’s gonna be big – DJ Caution, MC One Consciousness, and myself…

Hip hop, Ghetto House, Dubstep, Dirty South, and a lot more. 10PM – ??

chinese pop songs remixed//BLACK RABBIT

what. up.

fuck an apology, just gonna hit em with the remix. my boy Caution and I did this in about twenty hours. we sampled crickets from outside my apartment building at 3am and used them as percussion.

the track is by Hebe, a Taiwanese pop singer who’s playing at Black Rabbit festival this weekend in Shanghai, along with Ludacris, Mount Kimbie, Titus Androndicus, Gold Panda, Saigon, and a lot of other artists I’m feeling. four stages.

Love (we love bang remix) by HeatWolves

tickets are RMB260 pre-sale here. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS. Don’t be that dude who just ate avocados + Gouda and got a foot massage on Sunday while everyone else was wilding out at the biggest music festival in Shanghai ever.

i’m also playing at the festival in both Shanghai and Beijing, along with Grandmaster Flash on the NBA Stage. pump. apparently Grandmaster Flash has a list of about 200 songs that none of the other DJs can play. they’re all the most famous 80′s/90′s rap songs but likely no Dub.STEP and or JUKE so I won’t have to feel the wrath of the grandmaster.

gonna post music by Black Rabbit artists and more exclusives all week.

New Ceezy Mixtape! Playing this Saturday at Dada…

Doing a party at Dada this Saturday with fellow Otakrew member Ceezy. He’s one of the busiest producers in Shanghai, with an output eclipsed by only The Acid Pony club, but they don’t sleep.

Like in his previous mixtape, the 22 year-old Shanghainese-native takes you on a journey, this time through soul, funk, and hip hop. Just in time for summer’s sunset. It’s short, but the track selection is fire, with a great Ceezy tune at the end.

this saturday @ dada!

real happy with this poster. will give some explanation later.

(glass awareness)/thoughts on love bang #8

big, big thanks + mad love to everyone who came out to Dada on Saturday for Love Bang #8.  also want to thank Mache from Layabozi, Tom and Greig from Shanghai 24/7, the homies at uDance, Michael and the staff at Dada, all the breakers, peeps from social interwebs, and of course, Caution, hBd, and Chuck D.

that party felt like a giant house party. Caution and hBd reminded everyone what a real DJ is, which is not some der playing boring house music with their head down.

With a few exceptions, DJs in Shanghai seriously need to step their game up. I’m included in peeps who need to step up said game.

a lot of people move to Shanghai, get caught up in the electro/house scene, and forget about hip hop, rock, and the other genres they grew up with. we’re trying to remind people about that music, and why it’s so good (e.g. you can actually dance with someone instead of spazing around them, girls like it…)

even when the police came around 2:45AM (too many peeps. too hype) and the music basically went off for thirty minutes, almost everyone stayed and talked until the beats returned…

we’re doing it again on August 20th, with Ceezy and another special guest. Plus, Love Bang meets Sub Culture at The Shelter on Saturday August 6th.

so thanks again, cause everyone who came out knows that was something special.

proper space disco refix of a classic Stevie Wonder track from 1966. poor boy meets rich girl story.

and if you haven’t peeps it yet, the interview I did with DJ Caution on Shanghai 24/7 is classic.

hBd

Joining Love Bang #8 this Saturday at Dada, and representing Shanghai, the two time DMC champion – hBd. He’s playing from midnight – 2:00am, don’t sleep!

I’ve seen this kid spin a few times and he’s insane on the turntables. Great selections and serious technical skills. Expect hip hop, funk, party jams, and even some dubstep.

Here’s a video of him and the rest of the Lab crew scratching around one afternoon, upstairs from KIN on Maoming Lu. hBd is the dude in front of the window wearing black, in between the two dudes with hats.
