Breaking news! Crazy neighbor is back! Somehow he’s out of jail!
We interrupt our your scheduled content for a special bulletin…
This Sunday, Love Bang and the Xu Dong Mei Anti-EDM Foundation present a proper house party (actually in a house — a mansion) with BBQ, good beers, and 10 of our city’s finest DJs and crews dropping hip hop, dancehall, house, bass, juke, rock, and **zero commercial EDM** on two floors until at least 6am.
Because Shanghai deserves better than corporate parties and wasteman EDM…
Because, well, a house party really is the opposite of an EDM festival.
Because no one has to work on Monday.
The fest begins at 4pm with some crates of beer and BBQ that the Love Bang Ayis ordered from CityShop. Backyard vibes in the beginning, then moving into the basement as the night progresses. Here’s the music lineup:
4.30-6.30pm: DJ BO (Old-school funk and rock)
6.30-8.30pm: Skinny Brown (Indian Set and Reggae Set)
8.30-10.30pm: DJ Maze (Dancehall / Reggae)
10.30-11pm: Dead702 (Live MPC Set)
11pm-12.30am-Come Correct Crew (Hip Hop)
12.30-1.30am: Baby Carnival (CantopopTrap???)
1.30-3am – Love Bang (Juke & Rap TURNUP)
3am-5am: Push & Pull feat Zean (UK Bass / Dubstep / Grime)
5-7am: Minimalist feat Means&3rd (Proper House & Techno)
Address: Dynasty Villa – B18, 851 Hongjing Lu, near Yan’an Xi Lu
Note: After 8pm, the door is ON Yan’an Lu (north side of the road), between Hongjing Lu and Hongqiao Lu.
Cover is 100 love bang gummy crocodiles, including five drinks. Cash also accepted in the absence of gummy crocodiles. Come thru!
Not sure quite which number we’re on, but 33 sounds nice. About to go pick up some new T-Shirts from the factory now too. Finally put birth control cat on a T-Shirt, as well as the new dog pictured on the flyer above. Will have some of these available in America in late July / early August as well.
Been mad busy with work lately and only DJing like twice a month, which means lots and lots of new trax. Really enjoying DJing way more now that I don’t eat from it. Here’s a little sample of the monster jams to expect at the club on Friday night.
JETS – The Chants
Initially wasn’t feeling the new EP from Jimmy Edgar and Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) a.k.a. JETS, but it’s a grower.
Jamie XX – Girl
Never liked “Far Nearer” but dude went ahead and dropped one of the best albums of
2015. Brilliant flip of the sample from Freeze’s “I.O.U.”
Les Sins – Talk About
Speaking of sample flips…
Big Dope P – Hit The Block (Rustie Remix)
“Maximal” Peak-time banger
Freddie Gibbs & Kaytranada – My Dope House
Kaytranada’s one of the freshest hip hop producers in a long, long time…
Chief Keef – MCM
Every time I see someone rocking MCM I think of this tune now. “I don’t wear no fuckin’ MCM”. Those bells sound like winter in Chicago.
Kingdom – No Type Refix
Kingdom turning some Top 40 hip hop into pure evil.
There you go, some new jams. Catch you on Friday night at Dada Shanghai. Also DJing at the Shangri-La in Lujiazui on Sunday afternoon, but expect more laid-back, sunshine music for that one.
Much love to everyone who came to Dada last Saturday night. Didn’t expect that wild of a night…We got home at like 6.40am. Anyway, here’s what the party sounded like from 11.30pm–1.30am. DJ Caution x Heatwolves live on two Technics and Serato. Recorded with a Zoom H2 mic in the corner. No tracklist.
[update: the first one was a banger and we're doing this again on Thursday, March 19]
What up. So, Love Bang recently got the opportunity to do a bi-weekly Thursday party at Lola Club – the same place Derrick Carter, Josh Wink, KiNK, and the like play when they come to Shanghai. Funny side story, these French dudes I know are making this documentary about underground music in Shanghai, and they asked Derrick Carter for an interview or a big up, and Derrick was like “Your shit, is not my shit”.
Anyway. We’re taking over two Thursdays and flying this starship through a detour from their usual program of house. It’s gonna be eclectic, but not as much as a Love Bang party. Lots of ’80s sleaze, breakdance tunes, music inspired by space travel, all kinds of good shit you can groove to. The place has a Funktion One soundsystem, one of the world’s best. Really looking forward to the first flight this Thursday.
Address: 570 Yongjia Lu, near Yueyang Lu | 永嘉路570号4号楼, 近岳阳路
The sound of VELVET STARSHIP is like..
Mary Jane Girls – Candy Man (12″ Mix)
Casco – Cybernetic Love
Midnight Star – Operator
Skream – Rollercoaster ft. Sam Frank
Prince – Clouds [btw if you haven't peeped the new Prince album you need to get on that]
And we’ll go much deeper into the cybernetic funk galaxy, and even play some classics… Been digging a LOT for this one.
So, unlike a Love Bang party, you won’t hear anything like this:
Chief Keef – Citgo
No tech-house either
Sorry it’s been a minute since the last post. Between work and digging for music, haven’t had much time to blog. But Saturday night, it’s going down. Hip hop, star-funk, party trax, classic Chinese love songs by DJ Caution, Dave K, T-Plus, and introducing Li Bao Guo the raccoon cab driver… This is the place to be in Shanghai on Saturday.
Here’s an example of what you might hear on the warm-up tip..
Stevie Wonder – All I Do
Hey so my label Love Bang just made a new sweatshirt for winter. This one is inspired by all those homeless cats in Shanghai and all the soon to be baby-mama cats howling in heat out on the streets.
We’re releasing it Thursday night at this vinyl bar called URVC in Jing’an. The show will broadcast live on the uDance Radio website. The place is rad. There’s like 30,000 records on the walls and the soundsystem is like a fine velvet cake.
That’s the upstairs bit. Here’s the sweatshirt design.
We’ve got 25 of these sweatshirts available, plus free stickers for everyone who comes through. AND SOME TREATS.
So yeah, that’s 8pm on Thursday night. 999 Xikang Lu, near Anyuan Lu. DJ sets by DJ Caution, Will A, myself, and some special guests…
Come say what up! It’s free. And drinks are buy-one-get-one until 11pm.
Hey sorry it’s been a minute since the last post. Been busy writing other places…
As far as new music, I’m playing the hottest old and new jams every Thursday night live on a Chinese internet radio station called uDance. You can stream that live every Thursday from 8pm-midnight (Shanghai time) on the uDance website.
And if you’re in Shanghai, you can just come hang out at the spot. It’s a really dope new vinyl bar/café called URVC. They’ve got thousands of records for sale, plush couches, and a ridiculous soundsystem with speakers from 1972 and amplifiers by brands I can’t pronounce. We get guest DJs in every Thursday too, including some of the incoming DJs playing around Shanghai on the weekend.
And it’s free to get in, with buy-one-get-one drinks until midnight. So stream that live or drop in and say what up.
