Love Bang had to drop a dope tape for Valentine’s Day. Here it is – forty minutes of 80s boogie, sleaze, and synth-pop in the first half then icy R&B // lovestep vibes in the second half. Even Mike Tyson shows up to talk about sex for a minute. Selected and mixed by DJ Caution.
This tape was too sexy for Soundcloud this so we just threw it up on Zippyshare. Click the orange “Download Now” button to grab it. Here’s the link.
Tracklist coming soon. You can catch DJ Caution at Love Bang Presents: TRU LUX @ CA Club in Xintiandi next Thursday.
You’re stuck inside but you’re not alone – it’s time for love. Here’s some timeless baby-making music to light your candles. New tunes from our good friend DJ Sal aka Skinny Brown, that time-traveling, ethnically ambiguous global mystic who hosts on Shanghai’s English TV channel and DJs from time to time at a party called Popasuda. Well he’s finally put together a mixtape for his night at Dada Bar tonight, and it’s free and a must grab.
There’s a million house music nights in China, but there’s only one Popasuda. This monthly party sounds like a mixtape that never leaves the player at a youth shelter in some post-colonial island in the tropics. His music policy is simple – no English lyrics. Patois doesn’t count as English in Sal’s world. Expect anything from Dancehall to Cumbia to some burgeoning African genre. Far from a culture vulture taking the best bits from distant lands, Sal grew up or lived in Brazil, Toronto, India, Japan, and lots of other places and he’s got a good understanding of this music. This is reflected in his mixing style – FAST mixing, lots of drops, lots of mic control, and a sampler for drumming out country names like “BRAZIL!!” in a Street Fighter II voice.
Sal describes the mix and the night as such:
“I’m dropping strictly tropical-global shit, with nothing in english. The mix starts with Brazilian Samba-type stuff, then moves into kwaito, cumbia-edits, random African stuff, global-trap, latin bass, and a whole world of international sounds”
GO GET IT. And check out the Popasuda party this Friday, November 15th.
Were you at Dada for Electric East on Friday night? Every time I wanted to leave for much needed sleep, someone handed me a drink or Q-Kraft dropped a stay-a-while tune. My good friend Chris aka DJ Alta was on at peak-time playing grime. I don’t know anyone else in Shanghai who plays grime, that stripped-back, aggressive, neon computer chip sound from the UK that gained mainstream popularity with Dizzie Rascal and the like in the early 2000s. The sounds of slamming mid-range basslines video game samples. It’s admittedly both jarring and loveable. Basically what came after gar-age and before dubstep.
Alta from Push and Pull cooked up the “融化 Mix,” a nice intro to some newer grime tunes and the sound he’s trying to push. Really nice one. He also does the all-vinyl night at Logo every month on the third Thursday, along Nate, Arthur Fox aka Pip, myself, and rotating guests.

So we had our second night at 390 on Saturday and just wanna thank everyone who came. What did you think? We’re trying to make this the best club experience in Shanghai, so any feedback much appreciated. We’ve got our next night there on August 17th followed by a special show with Egyptian Lover in early September. Yep, Egyptian Lover. Live 808 set and dance routine. Stay tuned for more on that.
It’s definitely a different vibe from our Dada parties, i.e. more grown up, but we’re growing up too. We still have a monthly at Dada but that’s not Love Bang, it’s just a night for Caution and I to play back-to-back all night, with the occasional guest too. We’ve got one of those nights coming up on July 26th with guest William J from Singapore’s Darker Than Wax label. He’s already handed us a banger of a mixtape that we’ll drop next week, but until then peep the second mix by last night’s guest ADO8. Solid.

Big thanks to everyone who came out to the website launch on Friday! Good vibe as always and lots of new heads.
Feeling so hot you can’t think straight? We have just the summer mix for that.
We’re trying Love Bang in a new space this Saturday so we’re dropping a brand new mix on cassette. It’s way different from what we play in the club but music we love nonetheless. Here’s Side A by DJ Caution – full download and tracklist coming on Sunday, but you can buy the cassette at our show at 390 on Saturday.
Yep, a cassette, like that Aerosmith “Get a Grip” or GnR “Appetite For Destruction” you probably used to have. This one’s put out by the good folk at Uptown Record Store, your only stop for EPs, LPs, vintage gear, and more in Shanghai, right on Pingwu Lu near Xingfu Lu.
Here it is – our exclusive, official mix for the 2013 JUE Festival happening right now in Shanghai and Beijing.
