Super Ayi Cleaning Team Feburary Mixtape

We’re doing a new mixtape every month, and this one dropped just in time for Valentine’s Day. It’s called HE▲RTBE▲TS [阿姨爱巢]

The first half is mostly new songs, heavy on the bass, and the second half is straight-up babymaking jams. Lots of throwbacks.

This mix took forever to make because we couldn’t decide which direction to take, but we’re super happy with the outcome – so are our Ayi friends!

Free download on Soundcloud.  Put it on and make some sweet love.

new mixtape from the SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM – LOVE U LONG TIME

cover art for "LOVE U LONG TIME" mixtape by Shanghai's SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM

Here’s the reason for the lack of posts recently – I’ve been working on this mix right here with the homie DJ Caution and our Chinese auntie friends. We’re super proud of this one, and confident to say that no one has done anything quite like this before. It all started when we realized that the 1983  mid-tempo hip-hop track “World’s Famous” by Malcom McLaren, the same dude who did “Buffalo Gals,” sounds fucking ill slowed down to 88 beats per minute (bpm) from its original 107 bpm.

Then we went through about 200 more tracks trying to find ones that sounded just right when pitched way down. Lots of songs sounded like complete garbage, but some sounded amazing at slow speeds – sometimes even better than the original track. Italo disco, boogie, and mid-tempo hip hop worked best. These songs have heavy analogue synthesizer-bass that sounds warm and deep when pitched down to the extreme, unlike songs made with software plugins/emulators that sound awful under these conditions. If you slow down most modern “electro,” (the kind that people have in mind when they ask the DJ to play something “dirty”) you can hear the audio bits breaking apart like a spilled box of digital Cherrios. But not with the tracks on this mix.

“Built for rainy days and purple sunsets – the January 2012 Chinese New Year mix by Shanghai’s SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM members DJ Caution and Heatwolves. A carefully selected bag of italo disco, house, and hip hop, slowed down 30% and cut with some dusty old VHS tapes from around the world. Slow, bass-heavy, smokey, and sexy.”

Tracklist after the jump – hope you enjoy! We’re doing mixes every month this year, this is only the beginning. Continue reading ‘new mixtape from the SUPER AYI CLEANING TEAM – LOVE U LONG TIME’

Treats and New Mixtapes

smoke and treats, in Toronto

Been eatin so many treats back in Kalamazoo..

For some, the word “treats” conjures up images of cookies, cakes, pies, and the like. I choose a much narrower definition for treats.

Treats = gummy (-bears, -worms, -dinos…), powder-based (sweet tarts, spree, smarties), chewy (e.g. Mike & Ike, Airheads), or hard (lemonheads, jawbreakers) candy made almost entirely of sugar and artificial flavoring. They could be sour, in the case of Sour Patch Kids. Could be licorice too (red Twizzlers..) I don’t include anything chocolate in my treats category, though some may.

post-trap rainy day jams.

thanks to everyone who came to Shelter last night come correct. four-turntable action by Shige and Caution, raps by MC One Consciousness, and “Milkshake” pitched down 12% and some rare slow jams by myself at the end, followed by a classic ji gong bao (chicken hot pot) sesh.

note to restaurants who plan on giving away free alcohol and advertising this in SmartShanghai – get more than one bartender. wtf. some people prlly came from Hangzhou for that free Sangria last night in Xintiandi.

hadn’t been to Xintiandi in at least a year. totally forgot about that side of Shanghai. meh. did meet a grave/tomb dealer though. best “so what are you doing in Shanghai?” convo I’ve had in years. dude took my “i sell dreams” response way too seriously though.

man wtf is going on in America right now…jesus.

it’s raining but fuck it, i’m going to the studio to finish this track. until then, peep these:

No DL on the Gemmy track. Just came out. Also really feeling this mixtape – it’s a slow builder, and dark as fuck. If you like Salem, Three 6 Mafia, or anything on Tri Angle Records, you’ll love this.

Love Bang #10 Mixtape Dj Caution vs. Heatwolves by HeatWolves

Peep that then come out to the shows this weekend.. i got all kinds of crazy shit to dance to.

and another track I keep coming back to over the past few months. really feeling most of what Dark Sky produces -you will feel this kind of bass plus neon clouds just around sunset if you’re anywhere near the bund on saturday night.

and i’m playing psychedelic rock, soul, r&b, hip hop, and dubstep (late late) at this dada affair. lots of vinyl. much better choice than blacking out at 88 or one of the few other alternatives on a sunday night when half the town is gone and you don’t need to work in the morning.

Dark Sky – Leave

New Ceezy Mixtape! Playing this Saturday at Dada…

Doing a party at Dada this Saturday with fellow Otakrew member Ceezy. He’s one of the busiest producers in Shanghai, with an output eclipsed by only The Acid Pony club, but they don’t sleep.

Like in his previous mixtape, the 22 year-old Shanghainese-native takes you on a journey, this time through soul, funk, and hip hop. Just in time for summer’s sunset. It’s short, but the track selection is fire, with a great Ceezy tune at the end.

fresh summer mix by Blaise Deville!

sorry for all the problems with the site lately. having your site shut down because of too much traffic is like the police shutting down your party for noise – you’re doing something right, but it’s still not cool.

expect lots of updates this week, but first peep this – an all vinyl reggae mix by Blaise Deville, one of my favorite DJs in Shanghai.

I saw Blaise do this mix live at uDance (where i’m hosting Beat Buffet this weekend from 8PM – 10PM). He came in with a huge box full of 7″ 45s and used serato as a sampler for the sound effects.

It’s a great mix, just in time for the peak of the summer heat. So grab some watermelon off that truck in front of your house and dig in.
