Heatwolves.com is Dead, Long Live Lovebanguniverse.com

Xu Xiao Shuai

Fam, this site had a long, long run. Thank you. We had over 600 posts and who knows how many MP3s between 2008-2016. Much of my 20s will live on in these blog posts. But let’s be real, the posting fell off heavily when I started at SmartShanghai in 2014.

That said, I’m still writing, DJing, drawing, and curating music. More than ever, in fact. Thanks to DJ Caution and C, Love Bang became way bigger than the Heatwolves project ever was, and you should peep all of our writing / drawing / DJing efforts over on the Love Bang website. You can still find us in the club on the reg, and catch us in the cloud on WeChat, Instagram, Facebook, and Soundcloud: @lovebanguniverse

I know peeps from all around the world have read this site over the years. I’ve connected with many of you in real life, and some of us ended up becoming good friends. That means a lot. The power of music is real – don’t ever forget it.

And to think, this all stated with a drunk chat in Laos one night with my friend Oli and some too-far-gone Aussie guy on his second bottle of $1 whiskey, when we had to one-up his story about Drop Bears by telling him some bullshit about Robot Bear Police and Heatwolves in Shanghai City…

Much love ya’ll,

HW

Love Bang x Spread The Bagel Mixtape

0063

Sorry it’s been [more than] a minute since the last post, fam. Been busy with life and lots of Love Bang these last few months. Here’s a story, AND the chillest mixtape of the summer. Tune in.

So one Friday in April, Love Bang teamed up with Spread The Bagel in Xintiandi for the day and made a special menu with all of Xu Dong Mei the cat’s favorite snacks and drinks. The clear sandwich winner was “OMG CATS LOVE MEAT”, but the pulled pork nachos with whipped jalapeno cream cheese were classic as well.

closerhand

A bunch of friends new and old came through to enjoy some coloring activities. Later in the night some dude from the milk tea shop wandered over to sell some tanghulu, those candied hawthorn skewers. That’s so random and great.

0058

And… Cecilia stitched up this Xu Dong Mei flag (and designed everything else). Big shout out to Spread The Bagel boss Christine [right] for letting us this crazy project happen!

0061

Due to the winds of circumstance, we couldn’t have any human DJs, though we did have a really nice soundsystem and this mixtape. Fortunately, Xu Dong Mei is a cat, so she was able to play some tracks from her USB.

xudongmeithedj

Anyway, a lot more has happened in these past few months. Maybe we’ll get to those stories another time, but for now, you can just download the whole mix. This is a just-wake-up-and-throw-it-on kinda mix, and a summer nights kinda jam at the same damn time. Lots of reggae, hip hop, dancehall, and soul on this joint. And some chopped up commercials for cat food and bagels.

As for Love Bang, you can catch us on May 20, DJing on a boat, on the Huangpu River, for cats drinking free-flow craft beer from Shanghai’s own Boxing Cat and wilding the fuck out.

Then on May 28 with the Come Correct homies at new club Reel To Reel in Xintiandi. This is the after-party for one of the biggest breakdancing battles in China, Battle in Shanghai.

Neighborhood Drama

shotsfired

Moved out of the old spot on Huaihai Lu and into a historic building with my girlfriend, and our new cat who does not have an English name yet. Love the building and the apartment. OG hardwood floors from the 1930s, iron railings, and twelve-foot high ceilings. Just a few problems with the neighbors…

The people on the third floor maintain a mountain of garbage outside of their door; and in the fire escape but that’s another story. We’re talking a six foot high by six foot wide pile that includes: old milk cartons, expired medicine, paint chips, moldy pillows, random bits of plaster, and…a toilet. I don’t want to look at that shit every day, AND it’s a fire hazard. Landlord says Shanghainese people don’t like to cause trouble (上海人怕麻烦), so he won’t say anything to them…

So I just started throwing away a little garbage every day. After two days I came home and found the sign above, written in classical language that basically translates to..

“THIEF: YOUR FAMILY IS DYING AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW IT. YOUR WIFE IS GETTING FUCKED, AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW IT. HOW MANY PEOPLE IN YOUR FAMILY ARE DYING? CURSE YOU.”

So in addition to being slobs, these people are completely insane. Luckily they don’t know that I’m the one stealing their treasured objects. A few days later someone let their dog or child piss in the staircase just below the third floor, so we fired back with this sign…

shotsfiredback

Which politely says:

“THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL HISTORIC BUILDING. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR ANIMALS OR CHILDREN PISS IN THE STAIR CASE AND PLEASE DON’T PUT UNNECESSARY OBJECTS IN THE HALLWAY.”

Will our neighbors trip out in a fit of paranoid rage? Will they have a change of heart? Stay tuned to find out what happens next!

And in music news, NGUZUNGUZU are coming to Shanghai for a Wooozy offline party at The Shelter in September, and Love Bang are DJing after Girl Unit at Arkham on the same night. Crazy.

[DJ PP; a nice guy with a lot of bad habits]

Sometimes blogs die. One day they’re just, gone. And to the reader this is probably sudden and unexpected, but there’s usually a lengthy trail of reasons and circumstance leading up to this final disappearance from the net and a 404 error.

And some rise from the dead.

As for the four-month absence of this website, I could blame DJ Zhou Wang and DJ PP, but I should just blame myself. I got mixed up with these two international DJs and their jet-set life of sin and hedonism, and it lead to my downfall. And the blog’s. Thankfully their Asia tour has come to an end, and they’re back in the studio making the HARDEST trap music out there and sporting the freshest Hood By Air gear.

[DJ Zhou Wang; Just constantly fucked up and is also HIV+, and in denial about it]

Nothing is funny about being so international that you lose what’s really real, man.

But anyway, the blog is back up for the near future. There’s also like six years of archives if you get bored.

Some words from The Prophet. Shout out to Beat Electric for this one.

Happy Chinese New Year

Hey gang I’m posted up in Xianyang, China. This place was the capital of the Middle Kingdom for several dynasties and they’re still digging up stone tablets, jade Buddhas, and miniature bronze statues over here. Apparently anything you find underground in China belongs to the people, not you, so you can’t slang that precious Jade you found under the pee mall* on Taobao. Bummer.

*There’s a mall here called “the pee mall” because everyone pees there. Not like, in the bathroom, just on the floor or the corner or whatever. It’s like a ghetto Chinese version of “the mall that white people used to shop at” from xx suburb, but with more pee.

The pollution index here dwarfs those hazy skies in Shanghai by about..infinity. I tried to play basketball the other night and missed like twelve passes from close range.

Yesterday I ate pig brain, fish stomach, cow intestine, chicken feet. Fish stomach wins, followed closely by cow intestine (great texture, weird taste). No love for chicken feet, ever. Chicken feet are one of the key mafan foods that Chinese people love, i.e. foods that take a lot of time and effort to eat, like sunflower seeds and lotus flowers. Lots of work, little payoff. Good way to kill time though.

I’m about to go climb a mountain and find some fresh air, so peep this music. First up, here’s a re-up of the classic Love Bang Valentine’s Day mixtape from 2012 – Heartbeats. If you weren’t lucky enough to grab one of the 50 physical copies we handed out or catch one of the 1,000+ download, get this now. Then look out for the sequel next week.

Then we’ve got a couple tracks from Pictureplane. This is one of my favorite artists and Love Bang and Jue festival are bringing him to China in March for some live sets. His style is kinda like science fiction mixed with trance and rave with live vocals.

Oh one more thing – get down to Shelter this Friday night for another installment of Shanghai All-Stars. Hip Hop, funk, breaks, 80s electro, and all dem hot jams you expect from the Come Correct Crew.

1. “Bound 2″ – Kanye West
2. “Bank Head” – Kingdom
3. “Hit The Pavement” – 7 Days Of Funk
4.  “Without You” – Thundercat
5. Pusha Man – Chance The Rapper

“Get Lucky” was the “Save The Dancefloor” track of the year for sure. Also really loved “Kisses Down Low” and wished it hit harder. And…can’t help but love “23.”

Top Five Club Nights/Shows

1. J.Rocc at The Shelter
2. Egyptian Lover at 390
3. Love Bang at Dada Beijing in March
4. Baijiu Robot Christmas Eve. Didn’t know what to expect but that went off.
5. Kingdom…at The Shelter

Honorable mention to the Gang of Four show.

Top Five Meals

1. Anything in Xi’an China. Best food in China, hands down.
2. That giant chicken sandwich, still the only sandwich i couldn’t finish in my whole life.
3. Thanksgiving in the Orient.
4. That one time when KFC was perfect. We’ve all been there, don’t front.
5. Any breakfast made by my girlfriend.

Also, Sbarro stuffed pizza in the Crossroads Mall and anything at Frontera Grill in Chicago.

Top Five Bad Scenes

1. Getting so blazed on medical kush in Michigan and feeling too scared to drive with trees in the car so hiding the herb in a tree and coming back the next day.
2.  Quitting my day job, writing an extremely critical ten-page treatise on the company and CCing it to over 3,000 people all over the world. Random people in Africa? Check. Anyone named “Vivian”? Check.
3. DJing at a high school Halloween party and having twenty expat brat kids yelling “what else you got?!”
4. Arriving in Amsterdam with no cash and a Chinese bank card that wouldn’t work anywhere in Holland, having to find wi-fi and message my friend in London to wire me $200, after walking like two hours from the bus station to downtown with the smell of skunk all around and not one public toilet.
5. Missing a flight in Shenzhen, paying $250 on the spot for a new ticket to Chongqing, then driving five hours up a mountain in total darkness while drinking Baijiu with new friends, getting to the music festival to find DJ Caution already on stage and a lot of bad characters touching the decks, throwing punches, and generally just causing total chaos, then going back down the mountain at 8am and flying back to Shanghai in a total oblivion.

Looking forward to 2014.

THE MANY SOUNDS OF MICHIGAN PART ONE

smurfs

So I’m posted up in the Michigan forest with bags of treats and obese sunsets, geeked up on all the music from my state. Motown? Eminem? J Dilla? Iggy Pop? The MC5? All from Michigan, a state with way more influence on American music and culture than anywhere else besides New York, California, and possibly Tennessee. Madonna was born here, Aaliyah went to high school in Detroit, and we invented techno too. Pretty mindblowing that a state with a population of about 10 million has influenced music around the whole world far more than the megalopolis where I spend most of my days, Shanghai.

Here’s just a little sample of all the tunes from the mitten state, some you’ve probably heard and some lesser-known gems too.
