YO MAMA TRANSLATION PROJECT

Chinese has some really strong insults. Flipping through the pages of the excellent insult/slang-guide “Niubi” by Eveline Chao, one can find useful phrases like “fuck your ancestors to the 18th generation.” But when it comes to yo mama, insults in Mandarin Chinese stop at the standard “fuck your mother.”

I’m trying to change this with my new humanitarian culture project, the #YoMama翻译Project# on Sina Weibo. Back home in America, we have so many ways to talk about yo mama – her teeth, her funky breath, her short little IKEA-stool legs, the fact that everyone has hit dat nasty ass…and you know the bitch is poor. She’s so poor she can’t afford to pay attention, and that ho is so dumb it took her two hours to watch 60 Minutes.

I just wanna give the youth the same tools I had when I was a middle-class white kid in the suburbs. “Life Chances” may be the term preferred by sociologists. Some “humanitarians” wanna give laptops to all the poor kids in the world, but this is dangerous. We’re gonna end up with a bunch of kids walking around the African bush totally absorbed watching Dora The Explorer on a screen, headphones blaring, and BAM – eaten by a lion. Munch..munch…(lion spits out bones of young, technology-distracted Dora The Explorer fan).

The #YoMama翻译Project# does present some interesting sociolinguistic puzzles, though. Take the example above: “Yo Mama so poor, that bitch can’t afford to pay attention.”

Mandarin doesn’t have this phrasal verb “pay attention,” and translating this literally sounds bizarre. Something like “Yo Mama is so ugly she makes blind kids cry when they look at her” or “Yo Mama is so ugly, I took the bitch to the zoo and the guy at the door said ‘thanks for bringing her back!’” translates much better due to the lack of idiomatic English.

So let’s all join hands and come up with new, culturally-relevant ways to talk about yo mama – for the youth, before it’s too late.

really random bit about today’s photo – i was walking down yongfu lu with my dad and my chinese sister, talking about yo mama (obviously) and we saw this t-shirt for sale! no joke, ask yo mama.

…and i would say show this post to yo mama, but u know that bitch can’t read! yo mama is 文盲.

ROLLER SKATE JAMS // ROLLER DISCO THIS FRIDAY IN PUTAO QU

Growing up in the midwest, I spent many, many evenings and weekend afternoons at Rollerworld in Kalamazoo. playing Donkey Kong and that burger game, watching kids with permissive parents get their ears pierced by some derelict , eating pizza on grease-soaked paper plates for like $1.25 a slice, buying rabbit tails for good luck, and just skating around, cotton candy in hand.

don’t know if roller rinks are still popular, think they got killed by the interwebs.

looking back, the roller rink was the first time I ever saw a DJ. never thought i’d eventually DJ at a roller rink in Shanghai twenty years later but life’s weird like that.

Drinks are super cheap, 20RMB – 30RMB all night long. We gon’ give it to you.

The Bug, SpaceGhostPurrp, and Dat Update

What up ya’ll. Been a few weeks since the last post. Lots happened – Love Bang in Shanghai and Beijing were legendary nights. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported, and special thanks to SplitWorks for making it possible. Got the entire night at Shelter recorded and I’ll post the Cavia x Caution and Bicep sets on soundcloud soon.

Last Saturday at The Shelter was insane. If you ever get a chance to see The Bug and Daddy Freddy, don’t think, just go. I walked in at about 1:30AM and the whole place was full of smoke and  sirens were wailing like the Golden Gate Bridge was engulfed in flames. This lasted for about three minutes until the bass kicked in. So glad I brought earplugs.

What followed was easily the heaviest bass music show I’ve ever seen. I think I read someone describe The Bug’s music as “Apocalyptic Dancehall” and that’s a perfect description. Hundreds of people held their lighters in the air, the scene was so thick…

The Bug feat. Warrior Queen – Poison Dart

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

At one point some people in the front were dancing too hard and The Bug stopped the music and said something like “have a good time but make sure your fun doesn’t interfere with others’ good time,” then dropped the bass.  Again, just an incredible performance. Next-level.

I just updated the Some Art section with all the LO▼E B▲NG posters from the last few months. Got the LO▼E B▲NG Two-Year Anniversary party coming up on April 7th, and the Heatwolves.com Four-Year Anniversary Party coming up on Sunday, April 29th @ Dada -  there’s no work the following Monday. Shout out to public holidays.

Been jamming this SpaceGhostPurrp EP a lot the past few days. Dark, trippy beats reminiscent of early Bone Thugs, Three 6 Mafia, Esham, and Eazy E’s later solo production. Not the most lyrical MC but he’s entertaining and he makes most of these beats himself. Really creates a l0-fi hood horror-story x occult atmosphere, but never too dark. More smoked out than scary. Can download a bunch of his tapes for free on DatPiff.

Great Weeknd For Rock In Shanghai

Looking like another great weekend for music in Shanghai, this time a bit more focused on live rock. There’s probably some DJs playing too.

First off, a show I’ve been anticipating for months, one of my favorite bands – The Pains of Being Pure At Heart are coming to Mao Livehouse this Friday night  with support from local homies Boys Climbing Ropes. Pains of Being Pure At Heart are playing in Beijing on Saturday night at Yugong Yishan too.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Contender

Their debut LP has some of my favorite cover art ever, and I’ve listened to it probably hundreds of times. It’s great indiepop. If you like My Bloody Valentine or The Smiths, you’ll love them.  Pre-sale tickets are sold out, but you can still cop for RMB150 at the Split Works office on Fuxing Lu (right around the corner from The Shelter) OR you can show up at Mao Live at 8:30PM Friday night and you’ll probably get a ticket.

Then on Saturday night, we got my homie, “The White Heatwolves,” aka DJ BO, putting on the LAST EVER Trash a-Go-Go show this Saturday at Yuyintang. Trash a-Go-Go is about as rock and roll as you can get – booze-fueled and messy as fuck. Saturday’s lineup includes four bands and DJ BO, who’s a fine Motown/Northern Soul selecta. Plus this is local hardcore band The Instigation’s first show with their new singer and guitarist. Don’t miss out.

It’s not rock, but if you’re still alive after Trash a-Go-Go, head down to Shelter for the Downstate album release on my friends’ label PAUSE:MUSIC. Glitchy beats from planet GameBoy. Support from Cavia, Blaise, Drunk Monk, Icenine, Olive Pixel, and more. Will be a big night -

Heavy Bass This Saturday @ The Shelter w/Doc Daneeka

i wouldn’t care if this was a poster for a kenny g show, it’s so ill i’d probably still post it. drawn by chairman ca of beijing, printed by idle beats right herrrrrr in shanghai.

but it’s Sub-Culture, so you know the music won’t disappoint. Doc Daneeka has not only done mixes for XLR8R and FACT, and released trunk-rattling music on labels like Well Rounded, 50 Weapons, and Ramp, he also runs one of my favorite boutique record labels – Ten Thousand Yen. they put out a beautiful series of 10″ records last year, including one of my favorite releases from 2011 – “You Always Start It/Ordinary Things” by XXXY. running a label like that, you know dude gonna have a lot of weapons in the ol’ record bag.

peep this preview mix he did for Sub-Culture, a taste of what he’s spinning at Shelter. gonna sound nice on those subwoofers…

where i be at tonight.

this is where i’ll be tonight. big, big night at Shelter. peep the interview I did with Vibronics in SmartShanghai.

really need some chill vibes after the HEALTH show last night. I liked their set, and I’m really happy they played a Pictureplane song + “USA Boys,” but…

- Shanhai needs to step it’s sound system game up in a big way before anyone can consider it a legitimate venue for live shows. for real my ears were hurting during their set and i had to leave early. the speakers clearly couldn’t handle what was going through them, hence all the hisses and pops. Where are the fucking subwoofers??????

- both opening bands really, really sucked. giving a few Chinese hipsters synths and drums and letting them jam out to open for a respectable band = not chill. I feel really bad if that was anyone’s first rock show.

- less smoke machine. smoke machine does not make shitty bands better. also 8:30PM is too early for smoke machines unless Danzig is playing.

- why does that convenience store close at 10:30????

But for real HEALTH put so much energy into their set, and when they came off stage they were completely soaked with sweat and looked like they’d been through war. Pretty sure the drummer is cousins with a grizzly bear or is a viking.

Also, the BBQ on the corner (the spot with tables and chairs)  is the best BBQ I’ve had in Shanghai. Hands down.

So yeah, come down to Shelter tonight. It’s singles day in China (yes that is a holiday) – AND it’s 11.11.11.

I hung out with the dub legends Vibronics and Echo Ranks and dem are super nice dudes who’ve been making quality dub/reggae/steppaz tunes for decades. Fucking decades, mang. Plus the whole Uprooted Sunshine crew including Cha Cha – her last performance before she dips to Madrid for Red Bull Music Academy.  There’s an exclusive track by her and Vibronics up for download over at the Sub-Culture Shanghai site, but only for 24 hours so get on it!

if Blade Runner was a party…

If you’re in Shanghai this Saturday night, definitely make it down to Shelter for this. Two of my favorite crews in Shanghai, Sub-Culture and ROM meet for one party. Dark, heavy cyberpunk ish (nightmare hip hop, dubstep, ??).

And peep the ill flyer by Cheeri, who’s killing the hand-drawn flyer game at the moment. All ya’ll wack, photoshop-usin’ mo’fuckas keep doin yo thang main.

Speaking of dark, weird music, I’d been meaning to check out Hype Williams for about six months. Finally did yesterday, and damn..amazing.

Ceci n’est pas une animal cracker

we need some god damn animal crackers in Shanghai. proper animal crackers, not just cookies shaped like animals. another example of companies putting japanese characters on some shit that tastes like fake butter/chemicals and acting like it’s straight.

what’s up with the emo packaging on the kittyland biscuits? we go from “dinner is ready everyone” to “it’s lonely sleeping alone,” then back to “sounds great!” lithium, holla.

just need the classic bag of generic animal crackers, not even asking for Barnum’s.

this is what economists call a “market gap,” and I shouldn’t even be blogging about it but I don’t have any connections in the cookie/biscuit game so i’ma let ya’ll clock that loot, import/export bros.

so hot. dangerously hot. hot enough that yo mind might start playin tricks on you.

interjection

Spaced out listening to the Eddie C, Tiger & Woods, and Javelin albums today and drew this.

More on this later, including mixtapes from DJ Caution and myself (and hopefully hBd). We just gwan play some party jams on a Saturday night, cause Shanghai wants to hear it. We’re not too cool to play “Poison” by BDP or some Biggie. And without a hint of irony.

Little hip hop throwback track here…

passing out on the company bus and waking up on the other side of the tracks

On the train. A crippled child leading a off-key, blind harmonica player just walked by.

I shouldn’t even be here.

My company has at least twenty different ban che (company bus) to deliver the thousands of people in my building around the city. I took a different bus yesterday.

Me: does this bus go to longyang lu?
Driver: ….yes.
Me: ok, please wake me up when we arrive. I’m really tired.
Driver: (grunts)

45 minutes later, the bus halts at a station in the ghetto. I wake up floating in the wrong sleep cycle.

Me: when will we arrive at longyang lu?
Driver: longyang lu!? we passed that thirty minutes ago!
Me: what!? I asked you to wake me up!
Driver: with this many people on the bus!? How am I supposed to wake you up?!

There were nine people onboard.

Stepped off the bus, heavily dazed, and immediately saw this tiger. For the first time, I legimately thought about calling a friend to make sure this wasn’t a dream within a dream

What kind of city works/planning is going on here? This was not some luxury apartment complex. More like 1980s housing, and that’s equal to fin de siècle tenements in America.

Statues like this should have a sign/plaque that tells the story of their origin.

In America, people put all kinds of objects in their yards. But in a country with technically no private property (and really, no yards), I don’t understand.

I finally made it out of the ghetto. A place where people watch the chickens roast, or stand en masse around a card game, hands shoved into their pockets. Electric bikes fly by, silent and deadly.

monday morning jams

happy 4th of July, yo. Eat some meats and potato salads, and sherbet; and light some fireworks. i wish i was doing just that, on a boat,

big up to everyone who came out to the shows over the weekend (Sub Love, Acid Pony Birthday, and Beat Buffet). mad fun sippin drank with the old crew outside Logo.

especially big thanks to Adam from Friend or Foe/Drop Down for organizing Friday night. really fun, messy night at Lune with a schizophrenic music lineup that somehow worked really well. and The Instigation, who played a killer set. Need more good hardcore bands in Shanghai.

and of course nuff respect to Kalacuta Kid and Spin Doctor who came in from Chongqing and smashed it both nights. with so much mediocre house music, Shanghai really needed that ghetto ballroom shit.

no more shows for a while, except June 16th at Dada (Love Bang #8, hip hop special).

gots to work, but a few tracks for your Monday.

dey aight tho, just sayin

7-Eleven entered the Shanghai convenience store game about eighteen months ago and are basically runnin other mofuckers out of town now. Their snack selection, pretty wack. But, look past that and you’ve got:

1) An out-of-control hot food selection at lunch and dinner. I’d never seen people line up for hot convenience store food until last week. Their jia chang cai (home cookin’) rivals the average small Chinese restaurant here. True, more preservatives, but less risk of sketchy kitchen. Not sayin’ it’s cool to eat convenience store food every day, but sometimes…yeah the gong bao ji ding is bomb. Rice a bit meh though.

2) RMB8 Hot/Ice Coffee -Decent

3) Mango pudding. Pretty bomb.

4) Service that could be called “best practices,” i.e. not sleeping atop a newspaper and getting pissed about customers coming in to shop.

5) Store doesn’t smell like eggs soaking in whatever.

6) Slurpees – Yes, they’re here now. And to that Australian girl I met who insisted that a Slurpee is just a slushie, and then thought you were cute by refusing to call it a Slurpee and kept saying “slushie” in clear reference to a Slurpee, you weren’t being funny, or cute.

7) No lock-in inventory sessions. Most convenience stores in Shanghai close about once a week, at random times, to take inventory and count everything in the store. When this happens, the Ayis lock themselves inside and wave off anyone who tries to enter. Their expression is usually scowl/gas face + closed eyes + head shake and that absolutely classic “buuuuuuuuuu xing” dismissive hand wave. This seriously happens at like 3PM when I’m just trying to buy an ice cream or water in a god damn 24/7 convenience store and they put that shit on lockdown like it’s a fucking crime scene for half a day no exaggeration.

Really wanted to keep this blog relevant and post a song about rain last week. Not cause I walk to 7-Eleven in the rain for coffee and puddin sometimes, but because it seriously just rained for at least three weeks. Better late than never though. This that old soul shit.
