Not sure quite which number we’re on, but 33 sounds nice. About to go pick up some new T-Shirts from the factory now too. Finally put birth control cat on a T-Shirt, as well as the new dog pictured on the flyer above. Will have some of these available in America in late July / early August as well.
Been mad busy with work lately and only DJing like twice a month, which means lots and lots of new trax. Really enjoying DJing way more now that I don’t eat from it. Here’s a little sample of the monster jams to expect at the club on Friday night.
JETS – The Chants
Initially wasn’t feeling the new EP from Jimmy Edgar and Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) a.k.a. JETS, but it’s a grower.
Jamie XX – Girl
Never liked “Far Nearer” but dude went ahead and dropped one of the best albums of
2015. Brilliant flip of the sample from Freeze’s “I.O.U.”
Les Sins – Talk About
Speaking of sample flips…
Big Dope P – Hit The Block (Rustie Remix)
“Maximal” Peak-time banger
Freddie Gibbs & Kaytranada – My Dope House
Kaytranada’s one of the freshest hip hop producers in a long, long time…
Chief Keef – MCM
Every time I see someone rocking MCM I think of this tune now. “I don’t wear no fuckin’ MCM”. Those bells sound like winter in Chicago.
Kingdom – No Type Refix
Kingdom turning some Top 40 hip hop into pure evil.
There you go, some new jams. Catch you on Friday night at Dada Shanghai. Also DJing at the Shangri-La in Lujiazui on Sunday afternoon, but expect more laid-back, sunshine music for that one.
Sorry it’s been a minute since the last post. Between work and digging for music, haven’t had much time to blog. But Saturday night, it’s going down. Hip hop, star-funk, party trax, classic Chinese love songs by DJ Caution, Dave K, T-Plus, and introducing Li Bao Guo the raccoon cab driver… This is the place to be in Shanghai on Saturday.
Here’s an example of what you might hear on the warm-up tip..
Stevie Wonder – All I Do
Hey do you like PARTIES and BIG FUN? Well the Love Bang gang is about to dump an ice bucket of good times on that ass all fall and winter long. Mark these dates in your calenders, kids: Sept 30 (public holiday party) November 28, and December 27 @ Dada Bar Shanghai.
You can also catch LOVE BANG SOUNDSYSTEM spinning at some pool parties at the Pudong Shangri-La on August 31 and Sept 7. We play some houz musicz over there.
More dates coming soon. Here’s a deep Detroit track we’ve been bumping a lot lately. Not super new but damn if it ain’t nice.
Omar S – Romancing The Stone
And one more on a similar tip…
Seaside Houz Boyz – Deephouz Yall
New tunes from our good friend DJ Sal aka Skinny Brown, that time-traveling, ethnically ambiguous global mystic who hosts on Shanghai’s English TV channel and DJs from time to time at a party called Popasuda. Well he’s finally put together a mixtape for his night at Dada Bar tonight, and it’s free and a must grab.
There’s a million house music nights in China, but there’s only one Popasuda. This monthly party sounds like a mixtape that never leaves the player at a youth shelter in some post-colonial island in the tropics. His music policy is simple – no English lyrics. Patois doesn’t count as English in Sal’s world. Expect anything from Dancehall to Cumbia to some burgeoning African genre. Far from a culture vulture taking the best bits from distant lands, Sal grew up or lived in Brazil, Toronto, India, Japan, and lots of other places and he’s got a good understanding of this music. This is reflected in his mixing style – FAST mixing, lots of drops, lots of mic control, and a sampler for drumming out country names like “BRAZIL!!” in a Street Fighter II voice.
Sal describes the mix and the night as such:
“I’m dropping strictly tropical-global shit, with nothing in english. The mix starts with Brazilian Samba-type stuff, then moves into kwaito, cumbia-edits, random African stuff, global-trap, latin bass, and a whole world of international sounds”
GO GET IT. And check out the Popasuda party this Friday, November 15th.
Played a three-hour set over at Dada Bar last night and the recording came out pretty nice. Just uploaded the warm-up section, full of disco and italo heat and a little bit of that love music. No tracklist but I promise there’s loads of gems inside.
Back at Dada on Tuesday night then off to America for a month! Doing shows in Kentucky, NYC, Kalamazoo, and more. Stay tuned for more info on all that. For now, just come down and say goodbye if you’re in Shanghai on Tuesday.
ok so this isn’t the beach we’re DJing at tonight. my girl took this shot in Xiamen, Fujian a few weeks ago just before a massive typhoon hit.
but what about that beach in Shanghai? some disparagingly refer to it as a “sandbox,” but here’s the thing about the beach – it’s the only place in Shanghai where people can consistently throw outdoor parties with no hassle. if you look at it like that and see the sand as a bonus, well..there’s no reason to get mad at the beach.
we’re on from 7:30 – 8:30 with an afterparty at Dada tonight. DJ Caution and myself B2B on two Technics 1200s all night. however you feel, we will make you feel better.
Sophie – Bipp
S-Type – You Da Best
That’s a bit of the sound you can expect tonight.
Yo we’re back at Dada for a free dance party this Saturday night after the beach party [more on that soon.]
♫♫ runs from hip hop and house to dancehall and dubstep all mixed up on two turntables, Love Bang style…basically the kind of music I post on this blog and more. No Top 40, no smoke machines, no Gangnam style.
If you dun know, Dada is a world-class dive bar right by Jiaotong University/Xujiahui. You can walk there in about five minutes from metro line 10/11. The drinks are cheap and real, the sound is pretty decent (great by Shanghai standards), and the vibe…well you can’t beat it. It’s where Love Bang was born.
Starts at 9PM and goes till it’s time to eat some noodles with an egg on top over at the taxi driver spot. Add a pork chop to that and call it a night.
Come down and say what’s up – there’s lots of new heads in town and we wanna meet ya’ll.
Oh one more thing – if you’re feeling what we’re doing with Love Bang and this site, please take a second to like our page on facebook.
