TUESDAYS WITH HIP HOP | NY RAP

newtuedays

it’s Tuesday somewhere. many places really, just not Shanghai. maybe Nigeria?

For real why does everyone everywhere rock NY hats? Even people from world cities like Tokyo, Paris, and Shanghai. I go to hat stores here and find seventy different NY caps but not a single Detroit one. Like, really bootleg NY caps with fur and sparkles.

Nigerian dude in Shanghai wearing an NY cap: “Hey bro how you doin?”

Me: “Good thanks. Where you from man?”

Nigerian dude in Shanghai wearing an NY cap: “Ghana, man. You ok man?”

This is when I walk away but think about asking “So, Yankees huh? Jeter’s from Kalamazoo.” But actually I don’t know shit about baseball so if dude challenges me about the World Series or something then I look like a cunt.

Actually a lot of Koreans wear Detroit hats but they don’t know what the D means. So I’m like “yo, Detroit!” and they’re like “yogi…an-yay…….yogi….” and shit gets awkward. Same thing happens all the time with Asians in Michigan State shirts. Even when I say in Mandarin “Hey I went to MSU too!” I get confused looks 70% of the time and I try to explain I’m an alumni and people just walk away like “这个老外说什么。。。”

But this even happened at a bar in fucking Oxford England. Saw a guy wearing a University of Michigan sweatshirt, so I walk up and tell him I’m from Michigan, and dude says “oh, I must have got this in 62′ when I was in Vegas. Have you been to Vegas? you gotta go.” Vegas.

Anyway, here’s some of my favorite NY rap, starting with this classic diss song that prompted an even harsher comeback from KRS-One on “The Bridge Is Over.” I’m not a huge fan of MC Shan’s rhymes on this, but the beat goes hard. Conversely, I hate “The Bridge Is Over” beat but KRS obviously rhymes better than MC Shan.

Illmatic, clearly one of the greatest rap albums ever. Hard to pick one track but I haven’t posted this one before.

bag up that weight.

Just a real quick post on this cold tuesday morning – some hip hop gems from back in the day. Really weird knowing that there’s kids out there now who didn’t grow up listening to “Doggystyle” or “Ready To Die,” and possibly haven’t even heard those albums. So these are for the seeds.

flying rats

Monday morning. Big weekend. Big up to the VOID crew, who threw down proper at Shelter on Saturday. Techno isn’t really my thing, but I’ve got a ton of respect for VOID because they clearly do parties for the love and not the money. They’re some of the realest dudes in this city. Also shout out to the Clap Clap kids (Adrian, Nate) holding it down at Lune on Saturday. Too bad about Lune’s sound system, but fun party nonetheless.

Oh and shout out to that dude who fixed my air conditioner this morning, and my landlord for suddenly not being a bitch.

Negative shout out to the crazy dude outside my apartment. The one with the giant scar across his head, who always shouts “bu bei, bu kang! bu leng bu re! hahaha” (“not cold, not hot!” – first in Shanghainese, then in Mandarin). Actually this phrase expresses lukewarm feelings toward a person rather than weather. Him yelling this phrase and expecting me to repeat it has become a daily ritual. Dude may have undergone a lobotomy at some point, no joke; hence the scar.

Anyway, yesterday I was outside, sitting on a stool literally six inches high, sweating and eating a Transformers popsicle. Dude walks up with a small cardboard box saying “look, i have a little friend here. he likes to fly. he likes to eat mosquitos,” then slides the lid open a crack and a bat sticks its beak out. That’s right, a motherfucking bat.

At which point I’m like “what the fuck!? get that shit away, bats have diseases!” and dude starts yelling back “no! bats don’t give diseases!” and the neighbors are shaking their heads, some visibly disturbed, and dude gets ready to release the bat from the box, in broad daylight (no idea how a bat would act in the daytime). Everyone else ran away and I ran inside, and dude just stood there laughing to himself.

Flying rats. Not chill.

Anyway, I’m starting a bi-weekly radio show called Beat Buffet over at U-Dance. Every other Saturday from 8PM – 10PM, starting next Saturday, August 6th. More info coming soon. If you live in Shanghai and want to be a guest, send an email over to heatwolves@gmail.com and we can start the nine-part interview process.
