Water No Get Enemy – Pool Party Recap

Feel like this 104 degree heat makes people a bit crazy. Seen a few fights go down on Friday night outside Dada and Lola, and another almost happen in Xinwang, the late-night Cantoneese spot on Changle Lu. It’s like Street Fighter cause it’s going down between all nationalities, but mostly China, Nigeria, and America.

We had like every nationality at our pool party yesterday too, but no problems except for a couple gully peeps jumping off the waterfall. Looks fun, but probably not a good idea to jump from a ten-foot ledge into five-foot deep water. One dude ignored repeated warnings from our Shanghainese lifeguard uncle and then got smacked hard, WWF style, with a “no diving” sign. You probably know the Super Ayi Cleaning Team, but maybe you don’t know about the Lifeguard Uncle Smackdown Squad.

Anyway, just wanna say thank you to everyone who came out and all who helped make it happen: my right-hand man DJ Caution for holding the music down for three hours when the mixer was too hot to even touch, Dace from Money Shots for snapping all the photos, my girl C for keeping me sane, our guest DJs Choyce Kutz and Mau Mau (will upload their sets soon), Panda Express for hooking up the free Gold Cider with entrance, the homie Luce for the promo help, Shawn and the Shanghai Fun crew for bringing peeps down, all the pool staff, and my man Patrick Mai and his crew for hooking up the soundsystem – if you want it to sound good, you better call Pat,

Oh, here’s why we named the party “Water No Get Enemy.” This tune by Nigeria’s legendary Fela Kuti came out back in 1975 and remains just as solid nearly forty years later. A perfect summer tune, and one of the few songs over ten minutes I can listen to on repeat and never get bored.

Peep this mic recording from DJ Caution’s set last Saturday to get a taste of the music we play at the pool.

Love Bang Pool Party #2 – The Life Aquatic

The first pool party was so good we gotta do it again on Saturday, in Xujiahui. And we can finally disclose the location:

Wending Lu near Hongqiao Lu. look for the golden gate, enter the apartment community, and look for the sounds or listen for the music. Or just ask a friendly uncle “叔叔请问一下,游泳池在哪里?”

You can walk there in five minutes from the Xujiahui metro station, that’s lines one and nine.

Really proper DJ lineup this time. Expecting to get turnt up. Here’s the press blurb…

“This Saturday from 11:30AM till 8:30PM it’s round two of the Love Bang Pool Party, The Life Aquatic! If Wes Anderson made a 90s rap video, it might look like this… We’ve got an outdoor pool with waterfalls, five DJs playing hip hop, reggae, dancehall, and deep house, affordable food and drink, manicures, massages, and a location right in the city center: Wending Lu near Hongqiao Lu (文定路红桥路). Please RSVP to holler@lovebanguniverse.com to guarantee a spot. Tickets= 150RMB per person, including free entry to afterparty at The Geisha all night. ”

Love Bang Pool Party Mixtape #1 – Love Bang Weekend

Looks like this is Love Bang Weekend.

Friday = Heatwolves’ Birthday @ Dada – I’m about to turn 658 so DJ Caution, T-Plus, myself, and special guest William J from Darker Than Wax, a really prime label from Singapore, are throwing down at Dada, aka our living room. Definitely get down for William J’s set from 12AM – 2AM, followed by the OG Master, DJ Caution from 2AM – 4AM. T-Plus and myself on the warmup tip. Let’s sip some whiskey sours and get on that Life Aquatic level.

Meanwhile…across town @ The Shelter, we’ve got Shanghai All-Stars, a killer lineup of Shanghai’s best hip hop DJs:  Caution, Cavia, LJ (amazing scratch DJ from Guizhou), Shige, T-Plus, and China DMC Champ DJ Cavia, and special guest DJ Maze, one of the dopest dancehall/reggae selectors i’ve ever heard. Straight outta Danmark. I’m playing a set around 2AM as well. Get to rock at my two favorite clubs on my birthday, doesn’t get much better than that.

Saturday got Hu Ayi spinning at the Bund Beach from 5PM – 7PM for the Panda Express party. I’ve learned to stop hating and love the beach, simply because there’s almost nowhere else you can throw a proper outdoor party in Shanghai. You can hear the soundsystem bump from across the Huangpu and no one cares – where else can you do that in Shanghai? Expect a sundown set with dreamstep and soft waves. Cashmere Cat and similar style jams. Hu Ayi likes the bass and pretty lights.

Then finally on Sunday, we’ve got the first Love Bang Pool Party of the summer. We couldn’t get Purple Mountain but we found somewhere nice, and much closer. Only the Ayis know the location, but if you RSVP to holler@lovebanguniverse.com you might get a spot. There’s only 200. Another nice lineup: a goodbye-Mr. Pip set by Arthur Fox, another by William J, Caution, Cavia, and myself. It’s an outdoor pool and we’ve got good music and good speakers – hip hop, dancehall, deep house, and g-funk.

To get hyped for the party, I recorded this mix live on the porch, sweatin all over the place in this 100 degree heat. Big thanks to everyone who already listened and commented! Really good reaction so far. I tried to fill this one with as much water as possible; spent a long time ripping old water-safety and swimming instruction videos on YouTube. PSA-maker is still my dream job.
